To Seal, or to Port? That is the question.

Howdy. I am about to get a 12" JL w6v2 with my JBL GTO 600.1 amp. My obvious question is, should I build a sealed or ported box? I like for my system to be loud, but I like SQ too. I listen to mostly rock, which means fast beats. Will I loss a lot of SQ by having a ported box? Or should I just stick to the sealed box? I drive a ford explorer so I have more than enough space in the back. Any suggestions from people who have heard w6's in a sealed and ported box?

I think the first box I build for it will be ported then. Newbie question: how do you tune a box? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

build a sealed ported box. not sure if its feasable but the idea would be have the vented port in about the center of the box. spanning from left to right. then make a plug that slides in and out to seal off half of the box. so say you have a 4^3ft box with the plug in it would be 2^3ft and with it out would be a vented 4^3ft box. jsut an idea though

The tuning frequency is a function of the port width, height (or, more specifically, the port's cross-sectional area) and depth in relation to the box's internal volume. http://jlaudio.com/tutorials/ports/index.html

Anyways, sealed or ported is only a decision you can make //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif If you go ported, as mentioned, tune low.

Want to design mine Jack Frost? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

JK.

I guess I will make time somewhere and figure out my dimensions.

This may be a dumb question, but what would be the best tuning freq for a daily driver that occasionally goes into comp's. I've got a 33 hz tuning freq right now and making a new box for a 15" h2 that's 4.5 net cu. ft. but I'm still thinking what I should use as the tuning freq??

Didn't mean to hijack your thread clay--but ported is way superior to sealed for rock from what i've heard.

For SPL you want to tune around the resonant frequency of the car.

IMHO, for a daily driver w/ occasional comps, the best way to go is either with exchangeable ports (one tuned higher for SPL, one tuned lower for daily bumping) or to just build two different boxes, run one for SPL and one for daily bumping.

But, if you want to go with a single ported box for both comps and daily driving, then tune in the high 30's.

There is no "superior"....it's all personal preference //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

right now i have my 15xxx in a temporary sealed box and im disappointed b/c it doesn't go low at all. like when i try to play a song like 'get low' it sounds really loud on 1 note while the really low note there's no sound. i think it's b/c it's a sealed box, but im not sure. im eventually going to put it in a ported box, but is the sealed box the reason it doesn't go that low?
