To port or not to port?

Hey all, just found this website and its pretty sweet, so thought i would start off with a quick question.

I got a 96 ford explorer and just bought a 12" alpine type-e in a Q-logic box, and the box has an optional port on the side, like something you can screw in or take out.

right now the port is covered, so its unported, and im wondering if porting it will make it louder or better sounding or whatnot. should i take the port cover off or leave it alone? any info would rock!

do you know the tuning of the port? what size is the box? probably most are gonna suggest you try the port cause youll get better output.

Prefab ported = garbage.

I'de assume your box was not built for optimal ported use, so you would be better off getting one built at your shop, or build it your self.

i really dont recommend those q-logic boxes bro. so like everyone else will say.. we suggest a custom enclosure for your type-e sub.

well, with what i have there, what would be better to do right now? port or not port? if this is a possible question to answer hehe. this is my first sub setup, and in the near future i will invest in a better system when i have a little more knowledge of whats goin on hehe.

Build the box yourself or have one professionally built. It will sound twice as loud and cleaner to boot. Don't buy the rockford fos... er I mean Q-Logic box... it's not worth it even if is to just "get you by".

depends on what you listen too

rock =sealed

rap/dance =ported

either way Qlogic boxes arent the greatest
