Tired of hearing about high gas prices? Me too.

So here's the plan. Everyone don't fill up your cars on August 31.

Haha just kidding, made you look. Everyone knows that's a horrible idea.

Anywho, I'm just about in the mood to pimp-slap my local congressman. I'm sure many of you reading this are as well. Whenever I turn on the news, here's what I hear the parties saying:

Republicans: Drill, Gulf, ANWR, Shale, Nuclear, Oil....

Democrats: Alternative, Wind, Solar, Hydrogen, Ethanol...

Who's right??? Well this one doesn't take the head cashier at Wal-Mart to figure out (And I would know, I work there). They are both correct. Partially. Right now, this nation is hemorrhaging trillions of dollars in oil money to our Middle Eastern neighbors. Our environment is one of our most precious assets, and we need to protect it for our children and our childrens' children. Well I've got some good news and some bad news for both parties:

Republicans:

Good news: Oil isn't going away for a while. We have millions of cars, trucks, trains, ships, planes and power plants that rely on it. Our country is fueled by petroleum.

Bad news: Oil won't last forever- once we're out, we're out. Also, the exhaust it creates is hurting the environment. We need to eventually phase it out.

Democrats:

Good news: Alternative, renewable fuels are indeed the path to a cleaner future, and we need to embrace research on them.

Bad news: Alternative fuels aren't cheap (right now), and there's a long way to go before we can harness these forms of energy on a cost-efficient basis.

So where does this leave us? We've got to fix both short and long term problems. We need to drill in our own back yard for fossil fuels. We must cut our demand for foreign oil because it's killing our economy! I'm talking trillions of dollars leaving our continent each year, which is going towards building ridiculous hotels in Dubai. I know drilling today won't mean gas will be $1.50 a gallon tomorrow. It may take 5-10 years, but it's a step in the right direction; eliminating our tithe to the Saudis.

Meanwhile, though, we need to be developing these alternative fuels in order to eventually phase out petroleum as the fuel for our nation. Auto manufacturers need to work on electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. We need to investigate more environmentally friendly ways of generating energy-- solar and wind, of course... and dare I say it? Nukes! In addition, we need to construct new buildings in a more energy-sensitive fashion.

For example, I was reading in a Wal-Mart magazine about their new energy-saving stores that incorporate a number of techniques to save them money on energy costs, and to help the environment as well. Things such as no lights during the day- skylights provide the lighting. The excess heat generated by the freezers is pumped to the heaters instead of just releasing it via a heat pump... things like that are simple, yet smart. (Those two examples are just scratching the surface)

The USA is the smartest nation on the planet, and one thing we have a limitless supply of is ingenuity. Given enough time and the demand for new technology, we can do anything.

So, Republicans and Democrats, we're going to have to make a compromise. We have to cut our dependence on foreign oil by drilling in South Dakota, ANWR, and/or the Gulf of Mexico. We desperately need to keep that money here in our economy. We also need to be more friendly with the environment and we need to find a source of energy that can supply our demands indefinitely.

PS. Global Warming is a crock. That is all.

electricity is the fukkin answer. Plug in cars.

Holy shit why do companies not realize this?

reasons why:

1) It's readily available. Everyone who owns a car has some way to plug in a car (or any object for that matter). It will IMMEDIATLY cut down on oil, even though a rise in power needed will come. The billions of gallons we use a day for driving will be eliminated. As will ALL the gases. Helping the enviroment and our country at the same time.

2) Electricty can be garnered from alternative sources. Wind power, hydro, geothermic, nuclear, blah blah blah, etc. So we can develop electric sources to help our electric supply grow.

3) It can be used as a temporary resource. People want a quick fix, and people also want a long term answer. We can transition quickly into electricity, and slowly develop hydrogen fuel cells, whatever, so when that time comes, we can then again transition into a new fuel source, quickly, and cheaply, but not screw consumers who don't have the money to switch immediatly (i don't see electricity going away any time soon).

We decrease our depency on foriegn oil

Improve our environment

Get a cheap fuel source

Promote alternative resources (through alternaitve electrical plants) and give time for better power to be used later.

And, it does not screw the consumer.

Edit: I did a paper on global warming for my senior project. Some facts I found:

-The Earth is warming

-The Earth is in a natural warming phase

-The shit we are pumping into the atmosphere does increase the temperature (greenhouse effect)

-It is not known how much our shit effects the atmosphere as opposed to natural warming.

Electric car technology is still expensive though, and the technology is not very efficient yet. There are electric cars that BARLEY make it to 65MPH. That's not even the speed limit on interstates. I agree that electic cars is a great idea, but they need to put more research into first. Research and implementation is expensive, and therfore doesn't make it that "quick" or "cheap".

I'm not saying July 31st all cars must be electric.

What would happen if the government said, by 2015, you must have an electric car that can do x and y to be able to sell cars in america.

Every car company would, you really think they are going to give up this gargantuan market?

Lets face it, Hydrogen or another "alternative" fuel source, will not be available ANY time soon.

Copy, paste, and e-mail it or send a letter in to your local newspaper or news station because either you copied and pasted that from somewhere or you put too much effort into that post when a simple hot girl pic or FAIL gif would have been more than enough for The Lounge... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You guys need to realize that with an electric car, and a system pulling 200+amps, you wont get more than 5 miles!
Will you give up your car audio hobby for a better environment?
You can have a generator unit (much like an alternator) that has very little drag, and that is turned by the wheel, in a sense, infinite power, because the electric motor would turn one front wheel, and you can have a 500 amp generator on the other wheel that spins as the car moves.

i want gas to spike to $12-14 a gallon.
That would be the best possible situation.

It would drive innovation quickly.
shit yes it would. I really want to go into field like that...Working for a company to promote and design alternative fuel systems.

Gonna be an very in demand job soon.
