Tire blew out at 80mph

you were prolly going too fast and thats why it blew. spares are only made to go up to 50mph i think
yeah i thought spares were supposed to go to 55....
x2 on the 50-55 part.
Spares are supposed to be very inflated and are often undersized. You should have not driven in the 1st place.
//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif @ all of the above.

Freggin' youngsters who have no experience with cars that didn't come with compact, temporary spares as opposed to a 5th wheel and tire the same size as the ones on the ground when the car was new.

Sheesh.

Temporary compact spares are not intended on going over 50 or 55mph, dependent on manufacturer. They save space and that is THE ONLY positive thing that might be said about them. Outside of that they drastically change a vehicle's handling characteristics while mounted and are pretty worthless in general. Consequently they are dangerous more often than not. They aren't designed to be driven on past a minimal speed and they aren't designed to be driven on for more than 50 miles or so before they are more or less completely devoid of any usable tread.

The FIRST thing I did with Gossamer upon buying a set of 17" wheels was take the temp. spare and chuck it in the garbage.

I still have all four 14" OEM steelies with factory-size tires mounted on them.

One of those four resides in my trunk as a spare and the other three are in storage.

Should I have a flat, I'll just change the tire and outside of no longer having 5 good tires in my immediate possession I'll drive from here to Timbuktu on it if necessary. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Glad you didn't come out any worse for wear after it was all said and done, yne. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif I've been in vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed when suddenly a tire gives up.

It's normally not a very fun ride thereafter...

glad your alright, could of lost a member
thank you i appreciate that

was the tire really old, then?
no, my uncle replaced all 5 tires a few months before i bought the car from him, so all tires are less than 2 years old...

well thats y then.... that tires been sitting in there for 30 years.... you think it was going to be like brand new?
incorrect

finally someone that understands. i didn't think i was the only person with enough common sense to do something like this. everybody knows that donuts are absolute trash. when i replaced all the rims on my mazda with 16'' enkeis, i bought 5 instead of four so I wouldn't ever have to worry about a temporary spare, and even then I still kept one of my stock wheel/tires.

but as for the experience, it was probably the scariest thing i've ever had happen. i've been in a few accidents, some while i was driving and could prepare for impact, some while others were driving and i sat there helpless just waiting to crash, and i can say this was worse than that. going 80 and having one of your tires explode, not fun. car started to veer(vear?) and i was surrounded by cars on all sides and there was a semi in the far lane so i had to remain calm enough to wait for him to pass me, all while trying to keep the car straight.

then to top it off when i called my dad to tell him i need someone to pick me up and my tire exploded on the freeway, instead of hearing "wow are you ok is amber ok did you hit anyone" the first thing out of his mouth is "god damnit where the fuck are you i'll be there in a minute".

then i had to drive an hour away to get a tire because that was the only tire store i could find that had one in stock...

Ever since my brother said we arent selling anymore good year tires, Ive seen so many problems with them, Including one of mine. Its almost like he predicted it, maybe someone told him something. Cuz our distributor doesnt have them anymore either. I dont know.

Gonna have to throw up an x2 here only because they way you explained it you said it was the package deal from 1979. So if it was a newer tire back there, I take back the x2, lol!

Also I didnt think your car could even go that fast.

Glad to hear you are ok though.

Whew 80 mph on a 28 year old tire? That is some serious chance taking and you are very lucky.

not to come off like a prick, but that's not a standard spare. that's the original wheel/tire combo on a 79 volkswagen.
oh ok, your right then, its totally not your fault, speeding on a 28 year old spare tire , thats a totally common thing and this was only some sort of freak accident
