Tire blew out at 80mph

and it wasn't very fun. the only thing that really pisses me off about it is that that is my spare tire, and it was on because my original went flat yesterday. went to the tire store today, and they didn't have my tire as they're kind of rare(165 x 15) so i said "well can you take a look at my spare, it is already almost flat and i just filled it last night" and his reply was "that's just how spare tires are, it will be fine"

so i get on the freeway to go to another store, and after about three miles that's what happened. luckily i was able to control my car even in congested freeway traffic and no harm was done to me or anyone else. although the force of my blowout shattered my back left taillight....

that looks to be a standard spare, but still. I know that michigan highways are only 70mph. dry rotted tires and high speed/heat do not go together well. glad you're all right though.

Spares are supposed to be very inflated and are often undersized. You should have not driven in the 1st place.

not to come off like a prick, but that's not a standard spare. that's the original wheel/tire combo on a 79 volkswagen. when my uncle(who i bought it off of) bought the 8 spoke wheels, he kept one of the originals as a spare, instead of keeping a spare as a spare. so unless the original whee/tire combo wasn't meant to go that fast, it's not my fault. i know a lot of people that used to hot rod these cars, on stock suspension including wheels tires and i've heard stories of them going much faster than 80, and it didn't seem to be a problem for them... so as far as that goes, i wasn't doing anything that shouldn't have been done.

but, as soon as they said the spare was fine, i should've gone home and gotten my moms car instead of riding on a tire that almost went flat overnight....
