True story and yes he is a dumbass. One of my freinds brothers had 2 15" audiobahn somthing(shitty but loud enough for tickets) in a tahoe. Had 8 tickets for noise pollution over 3000$ total. On the 9th one he was taken to jail and had to be bailed out. Take in Mind Aiken, South Carolina is one of the top city's for retirment now so cops have no tolerance because of this. Ben Davis I was also complimented by my "headmaster"(prep school) this was before we now have an ex army general ggrrrrrrrr!

Like seriously what does a harley with straightpipes hit ? like a constant 158 on a daily basis out in the open? yet the cops around here dont touch them, they go for the guys with stereos instead

I had a cop pull me over in Daytona for the SBN, and then another one here in Ocal like two months later. Each ticket was $74.50

And I thought it was a cheap shot to get pulled over while at the SBN. I had like six other warnings while I was there also.

When I got pulled over at the SBN, a bicycle cop rolled up to a cop in a car and told him I was the one that he needed to pull over. I thought that was some bullshit.

9 out of 10 people at the SBN have a system. ANd they have the nerve to pull them over on the three days that all those people are there for the show.

only got told to turn it down when i was parked outside a auto shop and it was on like level 3... but when im at college the cops could care less about bass.. they've got lots more stuff to worry about... the only time i really let it wang is when im on the interstate and i dont think it would really be bothering anyone there

Yep, there's an educated response //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

As a person into both stereos and and Harleys, I am probably more qualified than most on here to comment on the difference between the two. Guys rolling around with loud subs do so to draw attention to themselves for whatever reason; ego, small penis, inferiority complex, whatever. They serve no practical purpose and in all honesty, I could care less unless I can hear it from my house. If they need to make up for something they can do it away from my neighborhood while I'm trying to sleep. I work all hours so I could be trying to sleep at any time.

Pipes on bikes do serve a purpose, on the other hand. Bikes need to have attention drawn to them. The first rule of riding is ride like you are invisible. To 99% of the drivers on the road you are invisible. Anything that will cause cagers to take notice could save your life. Are there pipes that are too loud, sure. More places than you know are ticketing bikes with loud pipes, too. You just don't notice it because it doesn't affect you. Those of us that ride see the same problem with the fart can mufflers as many of you see with bikes. The fart cans are illegal in the same way as pipes on Harleys (Federal emmissions laws thanks to Kalifornia) but it all comes down to enforcement.

Big difference between drawing attenion to stroke your ego and drawing attention to save your ***.

Every person i've met with loud pipes on harley's were not doing it to save their ***** at all. The mindset they had, I would directly relate to ego stroking that you often see with loud subwoofer setups.

Those people i do know who ride on a daily basis (and are as a result very safety conscious as it's their only method of transportation) don't ride loud bikes they simply ride smart and assume they are invisible to others on the road....i mean really... Unless the bike is insanely loud (to the point of dangerous distraction), you're not adding any more noticeability to yourself at all, especially at speed which is of course the most dangerous point to be merged into. I don't look out my rearview every time i hear a vehicle with a loud exhaust...it doesn't make me more likely to notice someone on a bike. I see people on bikes because i make a point of looking for them, constantly. If some jackass in an SUV doesn't see a biker, loud pipes isn't going to make them suddenly notice them.

Not to mention, the pipes face the wrong way...if you wanted to warn other drivers who are really dangerous to you on your bike, you'd direct the sound sideways + forward, not back at the people who are right the heck behind you. At speed, even loud pipes don't generate near enough sound to make someone in front of you take note. Only people behind you hear them at all unless you gun the engine and put some torque on it, and even then you're blasting it straight backwards at 45mph... no..loud pipes serve one purpose. They are obscenely loud, when idling at a light (in some cases) and when accelerating away from the light. every time i see a clown sitting there at the light preening under the glares of other drivers i hear "look at me in my biker costume! my pipes r loud!" Shit. They can't even turn them the **** down, as most of us with loud systems do out of courtesy at lights.

Point taken. There are people out there that take it to an extreme. On the highway, there is no point. In town, in traffic, I know that I have been noticed because of the pipes on my bike and mine aren't very loud at all. My SRT-4 stock exhaust is about the same volume, in fact. On the highway and at speed, even having flashing lights and a wailing siren won't help. I know that and I ride like every car out there is trying to kill me (I'm right more often than wrong on that one). The fact remains that there are more than a few oblivious drivers out there and anything that MIGHT cause them to notice me on my bike is worth a try. The counterpoint to that is that in no way is having a loud stereo aiding in a driver's awareness of what is going on around him and in fact I would argue that it is a hazzard to the safe operation of the vehicle in many cases. I'm not saying that there is no use for having a nice system, but with the sheer number of people prooving that they have no business with a driver's license and driving like dickheads, the last thing they need is another distraction.

I've never personally heard a harley owner say 'yeah, I just love how the roar of my harley draws positive attention to me, and causes drivers around me to be more aware of my presence.'

I have, however, heard every one of them say 'I love how badass these things sound.'

My city doesn't really degrade to gridlock traffic so even on normal roads the average speed is 45mph (even when posted @ 35)... putting myself in a gridlock situation, i could see loud pipes sometimes grabbing someone's attention since you get to rev pretty loud at constantly low speeds in that situation.

I totally agree with your counterpoint; anyone blaring their system @ 130db while driving through downtown is a danger to others present on the road. Inability to hear another cars' horn or the sound of an emergency vehicles' siren, etc. is just not good.

Yea I have heard that one once or twice.

I just dont believe that the exhaust on harleys are there for the riders safety.

Do you think it would go over wit ha judge good if you told him that the only reason you have, as some people say, "a boom box" in ur car/truck, is so people can hear you coming and keep you safe? I doubt it would go over well
