Thumbs Up - XXV-01D

is it superior than the x990?
The X990 has different D/A converters (Wolfson as opposed to Burr-Brown on the XXV-01D) and iirc the 990 has the USB input whereas the XXV-01D was from the model year previous to Kenwood's introduction of that feature on their better HUs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Outside of those two features they are more or less the same unit.

I got the Kenwood yesterday.....gonna hook it up in a few hours. It came from Saletronics in a "Kenwood Refurb" brown box, but the unit looks brand new.

It is a beautiful unit...can't wait to install it!

It's nice to see that this unit is still eliciting conversation. Prowler573 and I traded notes in this CA thread last year. I used the XXV-01D for three months and loved it. However, I was curious about active speaker setups and thus had to switch to other head-units/processors capable of giving me 3-way or even 4-way configs. But I did nicely tuck the XXV-01D away if I ever wanted to revisit using passive speaker setups again.

I have to say that it's still one of the best SQ units I've ever listened to. (And I've owned and sold off about 20 head units in my 20 years of this hobby.) It's quite the underrated unit amongst the Car Audio community. Pic below from last year.

Prowler, long time no talk on this forum! Hope you replaced your XXV-01D with another one?

I can find one new ~$200-300 more authorized with 2 yr. warranty.

The XXV-05V does not support a 3-way active per se but it does have a 4 channel pre-out for Front, Center, Rear, and Sub for digital setup.

Well, after a year I have to say that it's still one of the best SQ units I've ever listened to. (And I've owned and sold off about 20 head units in my 20 years of this hobby.) It's quite a underrated unit amongst the Car Audio community. Pic below from last year.

Prowler573,

Long time no talk on this forum! Hope you replaced your XXV-01D with another one? Hey, I'm redoing my system again and abandoning active setups and moving on to a 5.1 DVD-V and DVD-Audio/Navigation setup. There's a couple of HU I'm considering but I'm leaning towards Kenwood again -- their XXV-05V to be exact. I've read all the specs and "reviews" but wanted to check if you knew anything special about this unit.

You alluded that Kenwood in recent past dropped the ball on quality but improved them with 2005 Excelon/25th Anniv units. I'm still a little worried about their track record considering that I see a number of Refurbished/Re-manufactured Excelon (including 25th Anniv.) units out on the web. A little daunting since the XXV-05V would cost me ~$1.5-2.0K new. Can you tell me what specific problems their previous units had and have you heard of any current problems? Thanks.

with wut digicam did u take that pic? looks freakin' detailed and nice

Just a Canon SD400 with macro setting enabled. Taking head unit pics is tricky because of reflective lighting and flash. I've found out that the best way to take these type of pictures is from an angle -- minimizing light reflections from shiny faceplates.

that nice shiny pic brings to mind another gripe i have with my 01d, which is how easy they are to scratch up....

nothing major, just light scratches are unavoidable.

even putting it in the case it comes with scuffs it a bit.

they should make head unit screens out of glass, imo

I had the opposite experience with mine in that I thought it was very scratch resistent. The Alpines are the ones notorious to the slightest scracthes.

The only one I've seen and owned that uses glass was the Clarion DRZ9255. You cold run a ball-point pen over it and it wouldn't scratch. That unit had impecable build and aesthetic qualities.

nice h/u's

too bad im stuck wt a stock bose HU.

and id have to rewire my whole car if i wanted to put in aftermarket HU
Not if you went completely aftermarket with your interior setup.

BTW I picked up the XXV-01D a while back and love it, by far one of my favorite HU's I've ever worked with.
