Thoughts on Iran

I am cool
First, I don't want to start a conspiracy thread about invading for oil, or anything of the nature, but what are people's thoughts on invading Iran?

I ask because of two reasons. First, I think it's completly ungrounded, and that we have no right to determine whether or not they posses nuclear capabilities. We are the only country in the world to have actually used them, so for us to say people can't venture into that realm because they *may* someday want to weaponize the technology isn't right.

Secondly, and I guess more importantly because my opinion is just an opinion - I ask because we're already getting ready to invade without the public's awareness. I've got a friend who was a sniper in Iraq for 3 terms, and was on a 6 month leave (break, whatever you want to call it). Well, a couple weeks ago, about 2 months into his leave, he was sent to Iran - he was told that they were preparing a mass of troops for invasion, with the plan of informing the public and world public after the fact.

What are your guys' thoughts on this. If I wasn't against going there, I'd be alright with the strategy I guess because a sneak attack proves successful many times, but in disagreeing with the cause I really don't like them hiding it from us. I think many feel we shouldn't invade, so keeping the public in the dark on a decision that would probably go the other direction if the people chose is not a smart move IMO.

Discuss.

It's been quite obvious for some time that this administration's agenda was to move into Iraq, then Iran. I hope it's not for oil, because what would that do? Help gas prices? Probably not, and at what cost? More lives lost?

The sad thing is the public is kept in the dark about what really goes on, with the media in full control of what America sees on the news and reads in their local newspapers. Every other piece of information about Iraq, Iran, and even the WTC and 9/11 are all considered "liberal propoganda".

When we invade Iran, it will be a sad day in American history. The power hungry "Americans are better than you, look at us we're badasses" ideas are the ones that are getting this administration in trouble.

I'm calling BS...

we have a great interest in Iran not going nuclear. First of they are just crazy enough to use it... and have said they want to wipe isreal off the map.... and isreal has nukes.... and will use them... this is not in our best interest for soo many reasons it's not worth listing them.....

Next, yes we were the only ones to use them so far... however when we used them it wasn't going to ignite a global nuclear war... we actually saved many american lives in the process (my g-pa was on a boat headed for japan when it was dropped)... so this argument is stupid

I doubt this... low level guys don't get this sort of information... maybe his officer has a hunch but that doesn't mean anything... however there is a small troop buildup and it has to be assumed it at least in part has to do with Iran.

It has it's pros and cons for sure... but I imagine we are already heading for WWIII so having a foothold in the middle east will be an enormous asset... if that foohold happens to be 1/2 of the middle east that is a better thing... it kinda depends on the local population though

actually if it's for oil it is quite justified in a end justifies the means sort of way. Our way of life depends so heavily that if the middle east turns into a nuclear wasteland it'll be like another dark ages... our economies will collapse, governments may even fail... the world definately will decend into wwiii and that my friend is a bad thing....

Of course we are losing the PR battle abroad which does **** and may land us in wwiii anyways... I would rather enter that scenario with Iran and Iraq having loads of troops stationed there...

Of course Iran could simply step back, allow another country to refine it's uranium and it could have it's **** nuclear power and life could move on

also imagine a nuclear iran when oil is no longer the money maker it is now... then they'd have nothing to lose and boom.. there goes isreal and the rest of the middle east...

the problem is that it only takes one jihadist in power for Iran to nuke the middle east... that's the prob with a state like Iran having nukes... a country won't nuke a neighbor for the sake of national pride but I suspect a jihadist would and not care if he gets nuked back....

I don't think we give the middle eastern countries any credit. I have faith that as humans, they're just as responsible as americans. We make them out to be inferior to us all the time, but why? Answer that without any hypothetical situations and I'll be impressed.

And please never justify a war by saying we've got a lot to gain from it. Military was installed to defend our nation, not conquer others in an attempt to gain power, and run the world how we see fit - to our benefit.

I also tend to think that if (and this is all a big IF, not saying it's happening) there was a WWIII, we would be better off NOT to be in the middle east. We'd then be fighting potentially a 4 front war, with a stretched out military. Each man has their own strategy, but I feel this would be the losing one. Remember, if WWIII rolls around, we're not going to be solely on offense, we'll likely be the main target.

Explain to me why we can, but nobody else?
EDIT: Rather, explain why us, Russia, and China are allowed to, but nobody else? What makes us superior?
actually most of europe is awash with nuclear power

but the main problem with Iran having nuclear power is an unstable coutry with an openly homicidal/genocidal president... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif  that sounds like a good reason not to let them have nukes.... besides their down country floats on a sea of oil... just build some refineries and burn oil/natural gas for power

I would say doing nothing while Iran heads for nukes is a lot dumber than invading... Iran, with nukes, is worth the risk of our invasion

will it be pretty? hell no.....

would we be there for years as an "occupying force"? Yes

Is there a possibility it all works out in the end? Yes
