thought provocation for the bored

Screw traveling at the speed of light.

We need to just learn to create and manipulate wormholes. Right now that whole collapse thing killing any travelers is a real road block though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

can you imagine how much energy would be generated by something as massive as a space shuttle traveling at the speed of light? If it were to collide with a grain of sand floating in space, it would be catastrophic.

So even if we could travel that fast, we'd better have a good navigation computer to find a clear path of travel.

Indeed.

The curvature of space-time is so extreme that light trying to escape simply gets bent back toward the singularity.
yes, by the force of extreme gravity. once it crosses the even horizon, or schwarzchild radius, escape velocity from the singularity's gravity is the speed of light. vesc = (2GM/R)1/2

Any good books you would recomend?
So far I've mainly just read the "classics" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif Hawkin, Greene, Sagan, etc.

I really like Neil Degrasse Tyson's books though. I enjoy his sense of humor.

I believe the only way we would ever achieve or surpass the speed of light would be to effectively be able to bend (Contract space in front and expand space in back) space-time below and behind a craft into a wave shape. You would have to ride the bend you have created in space-time like a surf board sort of. You would have to use the universe's energy to push the craft forward. Basically I would put my bet on this sort of warp drive idea if anything were to really happen with light-speed travel.

we need to manipulate the space around the travelling object. moving the actual mass would be much more difficult.

Space-time would be moving the object along, negative inertia would be creating the expansion, and for the contraction obviously positive inertia would be used. The only problem is that this way of doing it would take a shit-ton of mass for both positive and negative inertia forces. With the expansion and contraction of space-time it would be as if the craft wasn't moving at all, but space would move around the craft.

It's my understanding that the mass of an object creates a curvature in the space-time and we express that curvature as gravity. Gravity isn't the cause of the space-time curvature, that is related to the mass of the object. The more curvature, the more resultant gravity.

dark matter and dark energy. although it's existance is hypothetical.

you're right. it's geodesic. but caused by mass amounts of gravity in a tiny space. the escape velocity from the actual gravity is the speed of light.

didnt they actually create some dark matter in one of the hyper collider's (sp?) in Europe?

maybe im wrong... i just thought i remembered hearing something about it

anyways, i really dont know much about this stuff at all but im enjoying teh reading of this thread very much... please contiue
