Have these amps been known to overheat easily? does yours?

I've had mine a little over a month right now, never had any problems. But today I was driving a lot and after about an hour and a half of listening to music at moderate volume, it went into protect. Surely enough this thing was smokin hot.

Granted, it was almost 90 degrees outside today, and I do have it inside an enclosed tire well with another powerful amp that gets hot as well. But I'm only running the amp at 4 ohms (~450 watts).

Is it normal for an amp to go into thermal protect under these conditions? Should I be worried about damaging my amp if it happens a few times?

Why not ventalate it a bit?

Check out how I have everything installed... The amp rack is in a wheel well with the box on top of it. I could move the sub box closer toward me, but it just sounds better when its at the very back of the car.

Think thats the reason its overheating? The tire well itself isnt very hot when I open it, just the amp. The tire well is about the same temp it is everywhere else in the car.

how could I hook up fans there? I'd need a pair of intake fans and exhaust fans... and I don't really want to cut holes in the wheel well cover to do that.

any ideas?

i bought a refurb viper from ikesound. i tried mounting it on top of my sub box but it was the middle of the summer and hot as hell in dallas. when mounted on top of the box it would go into protect mode. i moved the amp to the back of the box and it hasent gone into protect once in the last 5 weeks.

btw mine is wired to 2 ohm.

does anyone out there have problems wiring this amp to 1 ohm load??

Yes, could be a problem having it inside the sealed compartment, especially with another amp right next to it. I had one and I thought it was great. It only went into protect once and that was when the pwr and grnd touched //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/redface.gif.62fdbfe1a101588a808c4cff71bcb942.gif

In Sicily, the summers were around 120-125, and there was always a fire going somewhere, so the internal temps of my Tahoe would get pretty effin toasty. Amp never went into thermal protect though and base was about a 45min drive away.
