When you put a sub in a ported box, does it lower it's rms? I was looking in my CVR book that came with the sub and where it reccomends port sizes and such, it said to give it 300 rms instead of the usual 400. Is it all just according to port size or what?

yes it does.

the size of the box, whether ported or sealed will also affect power handling.

when placed in a vented enclosure, a subwoofer's suspension will move more freely above and especially below the tuning frequency than it would in a sealed box. cone movement will be at it's lowest point at and around the tuning frequency.

because the cone is allowed to move more freely, the woofer's power handeling capabilities are reduced, ESPECIALLY BELOW THE TUNING FREQUENCY.

if you're worried about overpowering your woofers, back the gains down on the amp. not enough gain won't hurt your subs at all, but too much gain will leave you with a fairly expensive paperwieght.
