Distributed computing, I think.
Some sources (satellites, sensors, etc) return so much data to be analyzed, no single computer can keep up with it; So softwares like the ones I listed distribute packets of the data to be crunched on individual's computers, and returned to the main database.
Seti@home is Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence; Analyzing packets from a satellite 'listening' device.
Folding@home is protein folding; building protein strands from an infinite number of possible combinations, searching for workable protein strands to use in biological science.
*edit; just read the OP's article. yep, nailed it. using your ps3's extra processing cycles to perform tasks like i just explained. great way to shorten the MTBF of a console IMO.
