The ****, rubber grommet, door boot, getting speaker wire through question.

Installing comps into my 94 bird, and I want to run new speaker wire into the doors and completely ditch the factory wiring. The grommet, or boot isn't big enough on my car to fit any speaker wire through. On one end it completely hugs the factory wiring and I can't even pull if off far enough to make the hole bigger.

So this brings me to the question, what should I do? I could just half *** it, and put the cross overs in the doors instead of the back and just use the factory wire to the headunit and wire new speaker wire back from there, but i'd rather do it right then mess with a sloppy install. I've also been reading about people drilling their own holes, but i've read a couple places that this isn't the best idea.

I love to install and learn, but I might have to take it to the shop on this one so I don't mess it up. Any ideas on how I can get my speaker wire from the kicks to the doors //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif ?

Thanks in advance for the help.

-PS installing the kickerss5.25s

Is it all taped around the factory loom? I just cut the tape off, snaked the wires through and then retaped it up with factory style tape.

If its like a honda, it plugs in and you have to drill your own hole or use the stock wire and put the xover in the door. I had to drill holes in my friends integra to do his components, we had to pull the front fenders off to get in there with a drill.

bah, I think i'm just gonna sucker up and give the guys 50 bucks at the shop to do it. Its way to effin' cold out side to be doing this stuff anyways. I'm going to stay at the shop and watch them to make sure they don't mess up shit though.

i can almost guarantee that they will F*ck you and use the stock wire. at circuit city, they way they used to do an amp+components was hook the front right speaker wires behind the head unit to the rear right speaker wires and bypass the headunit. then unhook the rear speakers, and extend those wires into the amplifier. then inside the door, they extend the stock speaker wire to the crossover, and then output to tweeter and midwoofer.

then if they did rear deck speakers and it was a 4 channel amp... they would just install new rear wires to the amp from those speakers.

they are cheaters, but hell. you get what you pay for.

I loathe running speaker wire through the door jamb factory boot. Possibly one of the worst experiences in my life. Ended up taking the whole door off on both sides.

Have fun and good luck. Also, it's usually best to look at these things on your specific car forum for DIY's and things of that ilk.

Yeah I know they'll probably try and ghetto rig it, which is why i'm going to tell them up front what I want done, and stay there to watch to make sure they do it right if they'll allow me. There's only one shop around here and i'm sure it doesn't get much business so i'm sure they'll listen to me if i've got cash =p

You can slit the grommet and run right next to the factory wiring. Wrap it will electrical tape when done. No one will be able to tell the difference.

As for the factory plug "most" of them have a spot open where you can slip the wire through. The coat hanger trick or a piece of wire from a MIG welder is your friend.

I just cut the stock wires and sodered my new stuff to the old wires.

I had to hook my friends system back up when he got his car out of impound, and I looked to see how they wired up the 4 channel amp and all they did was run the new wires to the stock wires behind the radio and use the stock wires from there.

Called the only local shop within an hour of me, and they said they won't rewire it, they'll only use the old wires and run back from there. So that's out of the question, Guess i'm just going to try and get it through that huge *** rubber boot

WORD OF ADVICE...

WD40 makes things a hell of alot easier. use it on the wire hanger/speaker wire to snake it through. but more importantly, use it to pop the grommet BACK ON after you're finished getting the wire through. the hardest part for me was getting the grommets back on, til I used WD40 on the edged and they popped right in

good luck. took me about 30min on each side, and I ended up with a few slits in each boot
