The RIAA is after me........

as for wiping a harddrive, you are better off smashing the discs with a freaking hammer.
the FBI can retrieve data that has been through a 3 pass 1\0 wipe (as far as i know) there was a tech TV episode where they had "disk destroyers" and the one used by the US govt' was basically a plate where the disc sits, and a cylander with a bunch of spikes that rotates in a circle and on its X axis, and just tears the hell out of the side of the disk.

there was a minimum of 15 spins for it to be allowed to thrown into the garbage. this was for regular CD. imagine what they do with a harddisk... id imagine theyd turn that magnet to dust with some kind of pulvarizer thing.

as for music being already "paid" for. does it matter? lets say i steal candy. then share it. you eat stolen candy. and thats wrong. lets say somone paid for the candy. and then shared it. the owner lost his candy, and you now have the candy. this is all fine and good, because the place that sold the candy made the money from what you just ate. *BUT* in the record buisness, if somne bought a CD and gave you a "COPY" its a duplication of the origional, therefore the owner has not lost his copy of the CD (as the owner of the candy did) and you now have it also, therefore the record company lost the sale of the record to YOU, and lost their $18, and you have the CD for the cost of the disc.

i agree that 15~18 is a rediclious sum of money for a disc that costs 2 cents to manufacture, 2 cents to stamp, and a case\pamphlet that costs 10 cents to print.

and maybe 2 dollars out of the 18 goes to the musician. folley.

im not going to prech to you or anyone else here. but the company that is selling that product is not making money when you DUPLICATE their product. when it comes to things you cant duplicate, such as candy, its ok and dandy because the origional purchaser lost his\her product. but when you both get the product and pay once. thats where they are loosing money, and upping the prices for the CD's for llammah people who dont know what they are doing.

ive been in the scene for a few years now, and i know how it all works on the 0-second. i had a buddy who was a 0sec courrier for 10 or 15 groups. one of them got busted, good thing that he was on vacation that week. or the cops of been at his door too. all the people that were around got arrested\fined\jailed(hosters mainly)..

i believe there was nigh on a terabyte or more of music confiscated.

now, believe what you will, but when you download music. you are duplicating an origional, and that IS stealing.

it is my oppinion that if you get caught stealing, you should be punished\fined\confiscated. at most, if you are just a simpleton downloading, they should delete it all, rather than having court fees- and lawsuits imo.

good luck getting sued tho guy. i bet you will loose (if this is real).
I would agree that it could be recovered however I doubt the FBI will get involved with an end user downloading a few songs. Having gone to a technical school I remember getting a shipment of donated PC in from a government office with every hard drive removed for security reasons.
Stealing is wrong. I don't agree with downloading music and never buying a hard copy or deleting the downloaded copy. Unless I hear it and like it I will never buy it. So should I let radio stations dictate what I listen to.. I think not.

It's funny because I do the same things with games; either download a demo or barrow the full thing to test. Back when warez sites were big the saying was that as long as you deleted the file within 48 hours everything was ok. If I like the game I buy it so I can get updates and to support the creators for what I think is good work. CDs do not work that way. They make me pay $15 to only find that the artist only has 2 good songs out of the 12 I paid for.

End result is I no longer buy CDs. Since I can't listen to them before I buy, I can't return them, there is no demo. I just listen to the same thing on the radio or play old CDs that I know I like. Living in Florida the Weather Channel has been my most recent source of noise. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif

Also I just thought of this but in a class that I took that delt with backup and storage mediums, CD were not a very good choice because they only have a life span of about 5 years according to the class. After that time they can become unreliable and should be re-burned.

I'm not sure if this only affects burned CD or if it also affects pressed CDs, but now days I have friends that are paying $15 for a burned CD fresh from the local CD store.

I have had CD sit for years and go bad. I also have some CDs that are easily 10 years old that still work.

I hate having 56k and trying to download bogus files off those file-sharing programs.

bogus = purposely...

- incorrectly named

- looped chorus = whole song

- first verse looped over to simulate a full song

- screwed / slowed down stuff

- blank files or blank after a verse files (aka no audio data...but the file size is still 'correct')

Well guys, I got a letter today from SBC and it contained a copy of the Subpoena that they were served with. It also contained info about contacting the firm that is repersenting the RIAA to reach a possible resolution before court. I guess this is where I'm supposed to throw myself to the mercy of Recording industry and say that I'm not going to do it anymore...........decisions, decisions....oh what will I ever do...... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Bring a gun, a BIG ONE!

Do it gangland style!

Hit anything that moves, RIAA reps twice!

Then burn it down.

Wiping your hard drive clean will work....if you do it multiple times as stated before. I've heard somewhere that government security is like 7 times.

Now...there is a program out there that I used to have, not sure what it was called but I'll look for you, that deleted a file and then wrote over the same hard disk allocation with random data as many times as you specified (from 1 to 10). It was like a super trash bin of sorts. Either way I'll look for it and let you know...it's worth a try.

just break it. itl cosy you like $60 for a new hdd, then shred all the discs and bring them to a local trash bin and dump them.

then just deny everything (and replace\remove your nic card - very cheap)

this is all versus court charges and lawsuits.

i mean, a logfile with your ip address isnt much when they dont have any actual proof. and i bet the judge will giggle the whole time too. oh yea. wear that shirt too

I used to download music, but I won't any more. I am still going to keep my music I downloaded previously, though. Not much, but I don't feel like getting rid of it. My comp has been reformatted 48000 times anyways in the last little while so I should be fine.

I read this topic when it was very first posted, and maybe a page or two after that, so excuse me if this has already been gone over...

But my aunt downloads a crap load of music. She has done a little investigating, and most of the people who were being caught were using Kazaa. Is it true that Kazaa is cracking down more so than others? I have been using Win mx for a while. And my aunt has been also, and just through her online searching, she has yet to see someone being busted for using win mx.

And another thing, a while back when all that RIAA stuff was going down, she linked me to a website that basically said file sharing was illegal. So if im not sharing any files, then how will i get in trouble? Im really not too concerned with the whole situation because i hardly ever download songs. My cousin comes over every so often and download a few instrumentals but thats about it. Im just as curious about this topic as the next guy.

Kazaa itself isn't cracking down at all, but the RIAA is using Kazaa more often than the other networks because with the way it is setup, it's easiet to track the location of files.

Funny enough actually....Kazaa sued the RIAA a little while ago because they were using kazaa lite to track people, and kazaa lite is not a registered kazaa product.

A good quality burned CD kept in decent conditions can last over 50 years with no problems, but by that time CDs will be obsolete anyways.

Oh ok. I was wondering why i barely here about other P2P programs where people were being caught. My aunt linked me to a site where it had a whole freakin list of people being caught and sued but all of them were using Kazaa. So i figured i wouldnt share any of my files and continue using Win mx and dont download as much as i used too and i will be fine. I guess i should knock on wood before i jinx myself

true that. Im not saying those programs that format and write the binary numbers over and over (1's,0's) Dont work. But ur much safer just trashing ur hadrd drive and finding a place no one will ever look for it. But then again like someone said before, the fbi isnt gonna be trackin u down for some music, hehe
