I'd like to know exactly how many compalined. Then divide that number by the total active population of this site, then provide an actual percentage of the site that actually gave a shit and bitched. Not supplying any metrics leaves little credibility to the decision.

Without actual numbers I find similarities to sensational photojournalism. Such an example would be a videographer filming a tight group of dissidents yelling out "down with the president" in a tight video shot appearing as if there is a huge crowd of supporters. When the videographer pulls back from zoom, it shows a crowd of 10 people chanting in an empty lot.

You're going to have to just keep wondering. Sorry to speak so frankly Dan, but that's just lame. I should not need to go look up how many people complained, and follow your mathematical logic, in order for you to understand the reasoning behind the decision.

Sensational photojournalism, huh? One tiny small difference between this situation, and your parallel... your example journalist is intentionally trying to skew reality to fit his own private views. No mods here, that Im aware of, have a personal grudge against using the term. We are simply trying to provide a fun and friendly environment for ALL our members. I take someone being offended by the use of the term more seriously than I do your apparent offense to not being able to say anything you want. Neither I nor any other mod here is trying to hamper your right to free speech.

Ultimately this decision was made by Goob, the owner of the site, and the one sole person responsible for what goes on here. If you are so upset that your personal rights are being infringed upon here, feel free to PM him and present your case. But as a helpful piece of advice, I suggest you be prepared to include why you feel the need to use this word publicly in order to express yourself. Simply using the 'free speech' argument will likely fall on def ears, as there are plenty of things you are not allowed to say here already. One example would be calling someone a scammer with no evidence.

Look guys, I knew/know this would not be a popular rule with many of you. But I/we ask that you try to understand this decision is intended for the over all benefit of the community here. You can pigeon hole the rule if you want to, just like virtually every other rule that exists. Or you can try to understand the intention here is meant to provide a positive atmosphere for people of all races, religions, and backgrounds. You dont find this word offensive? Fine, I understand that. But its pretty universally acknowledged as an offensive term, as yes it has been reported, so we felt the need to take action. If you dont agree with the decision, Im sorry about that, but life is full of compromises. In the grand scheme of things, this is a pretty small compromise. Again if this rule is so offensive to you, you have the option of lobbying your views to the site owner. This is not a dictatorship, we are simply trying to find the right set of compromises that makes the majority happy.

I'm pretty shocked by this considering how laissez faire this forum has been for so long. Not that it is a bad thing (I rarely use the word and find it highly offensive in some situations), but I never expected anything to happen considering the kinds of people that frequent the forum. Have the complaints reached some other body that oversees the forums I wonder?

Its not that censor rules have really been lax, just hard to enforce almost subjective to interpretation in some cases.

I follow your logic, but I disagree to an extent. Here's why. We are not saying black people here can still use the term, nobody can. If you are offended by other terms, feel free to PM Goob with your reasons the term should be disallowed. But, I mean this to everyone, not singling you out here bubba... if you are expressing yourself as unhappy about this new rule because you cant say anything you want any longer (even though you never could), dont argue that stance here, and then argue you want MORE words disallowed to Goob. That's not being reasonable, that's just causing trouble for the sake of trouble itself.

Again guys, the mod staff here isn't doing this to impose its personal will on the members, its simply trying to create a friendly environment. If you think Im looking forward to having to enforce yet another rule, and presumably will be having to discipline people over it in the future, you would be mistaken. I wish we didnt have to have any rules, that we could all just play nice and get along. But Im sure you, all of you, realize that is simply not possible. Thanks for your understanding.

No, you misunderstood, I don't care that we're not allowed to use the n-word anymore, I rarely said it anyway, it's just dumb that a black racial slur is not allowed but the white slurs are, ya know? It's a double standard, if your going to ban one, you have to ban them all.

You should disallow *** too. It's funny when used in the dome, but IMO it brings down the intelligence level in the tech forums. Maybe allow usage of nga/*** in the done exclusively?
