The N word.

Okay guys, the time has come. After discussing it between the mod staff, the decision is to disallow the use of the N word, in all forms. I know some of you will see this as over-moderation, and I apologize if you feel that way, but we have received some complaints over the use of the word (including the slang "nga") so it has been decided the best option is to ask/request/insist that forms of the word not be allowed. Nobody here is suggesting that previous usage of the term means the person is racist, but it clearly bothers some people, so for the sake of their views, we must ask that you find another way to express yourself. I understand the term, many times, is actually used to imply friendship, but even in those positive examples, people still see it as offensive. Please refrain from using the term, in all forms.

Again I realize some people will see this as over-moderation, and to those people I have no response that will satisfy their angst. I see it as trying to increase the friendliness of the site in general. Thank you for understanding, and please realize we did not come to this decision lightly. We do not wish to impose too many rules on you guys, but we also dont want anyone here to feel they are being treated as a second-class member based on race, ethnicity, or religion. Hopefully you all understand the basis for this decision.

In summary, the N word and its slang shortcuts are not considered acceptable any longer. I will sticky this thread for a while to insure most/all members have a chance to review the policy change. Thanks for your cooperation in this regard.

i'm not in the least set off by the rule..... in fact, i've spent years on another atv forum, which is very liberal compared to this one, and using the term is bananable offense

People will always push the boundaries, its human nature. All I can say to that is, if you value your ability to continue posting here, you wont push the limits.

BTW, in case people haven't noticed, MoT changed his screen name back to Mike of Tulsa so as to avoid looking like the mod staff is above rules that may offend people. Hopefully everyone will see his change as one to help accommodate everyone's sense of what is fair.

banning a word will just lead to other alternative variations of the word or a replacement of the word with one that means exactly the same thing...

I'd like to know exactly how many compalined. Then divide that number by the total active population of this site, then provide an actual percentage of the site that actually gave a shit and bitched. Not supplying any metrics leaves little credibility to the decision.

Without actual numbers I find similarities to sensational photojournalism. Such an example would be a videographer filming a tight group of dissidents yelling out "down with the president" in a tight video shot appearing as if there is a huge crowd of supporters. When the videographer pulls back from zoom, it shows a crowd of 10 people chanting in an empty lot.

I'm pretty shocked by this considering how laissez faire this forum has been for so long. Not that it is a bad thing (I rarely use the word and find it highly offensive in some situations), but I never expected anything to happen considering the kinds of people that frequent the forum. Have the complaints reached some other body that oversees the forums I wonder?
