**The MLB Thread**

just saying there are teams that have alot more money to throw around than the tigers. i agree that the tigers beat the yanks but player for player the yanks have a better team on paper..they always have the best team on paper
Really? If the Tigers sign A-rod, that is 7 regulars who were former all-stars, (Polanco, Magglio, Sheffield, Guillen, Renteria, Pudge, then A-rod) Not to mention Granderson who should've been an All-star over Manny or Sizemore. Then pitching you have an young ace and all-star in Verlander, Bonderman would've been an all-star if not for that jap in Boston, you have Zumaya and Rodney in the pen, Miller and Porcello waiting in the wings. This roster is better then you are giving credit. This offense is better then the Angels, Dodgers, or Mets.

The Tigers were 4th in the league in attendance last year behind New York Yankees, Boston and Anaheim. Tigers rank middle of the pack in terms of ticket price, whereas the other 3, are near the top in ticket price. You add A-rod to a contender, and you are guaranteed at least 3 million fans again. Detroit is also the 10th largest metro area, not including western Ontario. That is a big enough market to support an increase in payroll. You still haven't given me anything as to why the Tigers won't increase payroll. They have an owner who has said publicly he'll increase payroll, they have shown in the past they will spend for free agents, management has a great relationship with Boras. Pudge, Magglio, Rogers, Porcello are all Boras clients. The team has the fan support. Their window of opportunity is now.

middle of the pack for ticket costs?...how about tv revenue? what about merchandise? that all plays into it. depending on who you listen to talk most of them do not have the tigers as the most likely place..infact most still have the white sox and the cubs ahead of detroit lol and neither chicago team is a front runner

According to Buster Olney and Jayson Stark, Detroit is a front runner. Also like I said Detroit is the 10th largest market so they generate enough TV revenue. Chicago's TV revenue is split between the Cubs and White Sox. The Cubs dominate the Chicago area, and when your team is up for sale, you can't bring in a huge contract like A-rod. Los Angeles splits their market with two teams. Detroit is a big market. Also western Ontario which is not part of Detroit's market on the US census, also follows the Tigers, not to mention FSN Detroit broadcasts in the entire state of Michigan. There has also been a rumor about Illitch starting up a cable network but I doubt that will happen. With ticket costs, the Tigers can still raise ticket prices and be lower then a lot of other clubs. On to merchandise, the Tigers cap is one of the best selling in the league, do to the fact of the strong following of Eminem and D12. IIRC it was the best selling cap in the majors, but I think the NYY cap is ahead of it. You add A-rod to the team, and i guarantee merchandise sales will sky rocket.

lol i live 2 hours from detroit and i would be lucky to see a detroit tigers ball cap anywhere...cubs,both sox, yankees and the reds...in fact i would say i probably see more indians stuff than i do tigers. only place i have ever been too that had alot of tigers stuff was toledo lol

Considering Indiana is closer to Chicago then Detroit, I'd imagine you'd see more Chicago stuff, plus you seem oblivious to the fact of online sales //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Didn't the Tiger's GM say there's no chance they're going to go after Arod?

Mets sat down Wright today to discuss him moving to 2nd base. Wright had said earlier in the year that he'd jump at a move to 2nd to bring in Arod. Arod wants to stay in NY, and the Mets have always wanted Arod- and Arod has always been a Mets fan..

He also had said they weren't going to be big spenders but signed Pudge and Magglio //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I'm not saying the Tigers are going to sign him, but you cannot discredit them.

Personally if I were the Mets, I would sign A-rod then gamble trading Reyes to Minnesota for Santana.

I think it's either the Dodgers, the Tigers, the Mets, and of course, the Royals.

If the Mets signed him, I'd just move Wright to 2b, and keep Reyes where he is. They have him at a very good price till possibly 2011, and I think he's still getting better. I think Santana will be on the market next season, and the Mets will most likely pursue him then.
