People are fvcking idiots, their was absolutely no proof of y2k DOING ANYTHING. As for 2012, i certainly hope something mind blowing happens. Lifes boring..........maybe they'll be testing the new funky pups....just some food for thought.

To all of you close minded ones, how do you look at this picture and not see the significance of it? This calendar was real, it is made up of real data from there time. This was there scientific way of predicting what happened in the past and would happen in the future. They were great at predicting things and have proven that they knew what they were doing, so why do the closed minded ones not see the significance of the 4 squares and cirlcle god in the middle?

Are you really going to take the position that any of us can reasonably be expected to ascertain the significance of that "picture" simply by looking at it? If you had not read someone else's interpertation of that calendar would you be able to ascertain it's meaning?

what exactly are you trying to say? Do you not understand it? Just asking.

Oh, I am absolutely saying that I can't tell shit just by looking at it. In fact, unless someone told me I would not have even known it was a calendar. I might have guessed that it was, but it would have been just that, a fairly reasonable guess.

So, if you were the first person to see that in centuries, would you have looked at it and said, "zomg, this says the world is going to end in 2012?"

scientists decoded that shit just like they decoded all the egyptians writings. Thats all i can say about that part.

Well sure they did. I expect modern understanding is based on decades of scholarly research and debate by experts in a variety of disciplines. Which is why I am puzzled by your statements that indicate that you are bewlidered by the fact that we can't ascertain it's meaning from viewing a photo of this "thing" for a few moments.

the mayans were astronomical geniuses. They predicted many things, from lunar eclipses in the future, the day there civilization would be overrun, and they even predicted world wars.

Now the fact that the calendar mysteriously ends on the winter solstice of 2012 (12-21-2012) is what worries me a little.

the mayans believed in resurrection and that the universe died and started over every 5000 years. maybe they didn't actually predict that an event would happen, its simply where their calender ended. And there would be no way to know how to calculate days in a new universe so it wasn't worth it to them. So if they were that good at predicting astronomical events and ended there calendar on a certain date, then there calendar is probably correct that the world will end or change dramatically in 2012 since it is all tied in together with astronomy. Remember that they were dead on accurate at predicting, which makes it even more scary.

here is the best explanation of the mayan calendar that i could find, pretty easy to understand. i hope this helps everyone who doesn't quite understand it.

THE MAYAN CALENDAR

The Mayan calendar is not actually a single calendar that westerners are used to referencing today. It is actually a complex system of multiple calendars used in conjunction. Two calendars used in conjunction are the Tzolk’in and the Haab. The Tzolk’in calendar consists of 260 days. The Haab consists of 365 days. The combined use of these calendars creates a cycle of 52 Haabs (52 years) and is referred to as the Calendar Round. Small cycles of 13 days (Trecena) and 20 days (veintena) exist as well.

Another calendar used to track longer periods of time is referred to as the Long Count. This calendar is used to track dates relative to each other on a linear scale and utilizes a numeric decimal system to record dates. For example, the Mayan date for December 21, 2012 is 13.0.0.0.0. The long count cycle referred to as the “Great Cycle” lasts for 5,125.36 years. Correlating that to the Gregorian calendar used by most people in the world today, the starting date of the current long count cycle is August 11, 3,114 B.C.

Another interesting cycle is the precession of the equinoxes lasting approximately 26,000 years. The long count of 5,125 years is 1/5 of that cycle. December 21, 2012 marks the end of the Long Count and Precession Cycle. A fascinating astronomical occurrence will take place that day. The sun will be seen in a conjunction with the crossing point of the galactic equator and the ecliptic which is referred by the Mayans as the Sacred Tree. Since this is due to take place on the winter solstice, this should provide clear evidence that the proper end day of the Mayan calendar is December 21, 2012. Some say December 22,nd, 23rd or even other dates. However, the solstice was an important day to the Mayans and it is logical to think that they would conclude their calendar cycle on this day, coupled with the fact of the rare astronomical occurrence set to take place that day.

Overall, the Mayan calendar system is amazing and complex. It is the most accurate calendar system ever invented by anyone. The complexities go far beyond my capabilities to explain so I have listed links below to serve as excellent resources of information.

I just don't see how your conclusion that the world will end at the end of the 5,000 year period logically follows. It could be that they had other shit to do, or they thought that having a calendar that extended into the future many l centuries was enough. What about the belief that you just cycled into a new era?

they were on year 2012 when the aztecz came in and wiped them out.

they were on year 2012 when the europeans diseases wiped them out.

they were on year 2012 when they decided, ok, this is a long enough calander.

all reasonable explanations IMO.
