the elephant box is on the way

whoa there buddy... i was trying to be funny. sorry if i offended you, and yes BJ does beautiful work. i would much rather PAY him to do it than spend the same amount on materials to get it right... kerfed ports are new to me and i wouldnt make my first attempt at them in this install. but no... im not a noob. and a little FYI, its kinda hard to build a box in downtown Baghdad when you are taking mortar fire.

When building a box like that how do you make the large roundover parts? I'm referring to the very outside flare of the port...how exactly do you do something like that?
and if you search some of BJ's other builds, he has done quite a few with that concept
Its called kerfing, its actually bending of the material...

Do you have any idea what the box is actually tuned to? Flares on both ends of the port, one into infinite space, and two ports converging? Or you simply gonna build it and cross your fingers cause it looks cool when modeled in sketchup?
I would guess Chris could tell you within 1-2 hz what its tuned to //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Are you going there or is he coming here?
It looks like BJ will have plenty of "tricky kerfing" experience by the time he builds my box, although mine looks easy compared to this.

Nineballs....where in TX are you? I'm in the DFW and if you're close I would love to see this box in action //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Kileen possibly? I think.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Before or after the build? I could determine its tuning after the build, but I do not know of a way to estimate it before the construction begins. Could use some instruction if indeed there is a way.

I know its not new. but do you have any idea how the flares and the two seperate ports combine to alter the tuning of the box? Its not just addition and subtraction anymore.

My bad, the new design later in the thread is one large port with flares. But still, how does the flare effect tuning?

Why isn't it? The port still has a length and an area, and it's still easy to calculate the exact airspace.

The box is 8cf net tuned to 40Hz

Doesn't affect tuning if it's correctly measured, just as an aeroport doesn't affect tuning if done correctly

an aeroport is round, therefore the cross sectional area is the same. with your design the port is only flared on the two sides, and the cross section is different. If you took the flares into account some way, no problem. I was just curious as to how you calculated the tuning. In any case I am sure the flares won't move the around that much, probably less then the effect the estimated volume of the speakers would effect tuning.

I just had a large problem with the original photo that was linked. The new one looks much better.
