They are commonly used on displays so I'm sure you would be fine. They are tough.

awesome idea with the plexi rods though. i'm gonna look into that. that i think will look a lot better then dowels painted or wrapped in carpet.

id just be concerned with it structurally. if you go over a large bump in the road like train tracks, i dont see those wooden dowels holding up at 20lb amp for long...
