Tested new stereo, no sound

I'm not that great at wiring, so perhaps this is an easy fix...

We bought an '89 Toyota Pickup and the stock stereo wasn't functioning. My girlfriend's uncle checked all the wiring and there was proper voltage, so he determined that it was an issue with the head unit. We bought a new one (Pioneer DEH-11E), hooked everything up and got power to the unit. It turned on and fuctioned, but wasn't producing any sound. What could be the cause? I have a couple ideas my self:

1. There were two separate ground wires coming out of the harness for the unit, so we taped them up to the metal inside of the dash to test out before we dismantled everything. They weren't really long enough to reach anywhere else, and I'm not sure if they should have been connected to another wire that may have fallen down and hidden itself? Why were there two separate grounds?

2. We assumed that a stock '89 Toyota Pickup wouldn't have had an amp anywhere and couldn't find one. Of course if there was one, that would explain why there's no sound. Does anyone know if they came stock that year?

3. Could the speakers be blown? The previous unit didn't work, and I'm wondering if that wasn't the issue at all.

Maybe another reason? Thanks for the help!

Speakers could be blown. Saw this happen in an early 2000 Subaru at the shop. Check that and check the wiring to the speakers. If the deck turns on then its fine now just start trouble shooting the wiring and speakers
