tell me what to buy.

Lets see if this works. Here's my current head in the fairlane. Pyle knobby style. Cost me like $35 but has USB, aux, and even an SD card slot. Has what I need but no ability to configure anything. Is there a way to add some type of processor to it instead of replacing it? Put an eq under the seat or whatever. Has RCA outs for left and right and that's all I have anyhow; left and right rears.
nice oil pressure for the old tank. 302?

Yep. Original 302 but lightly modded; has 351 Windsor heads so it can use unleaded, more aggressive cams, exhaust, etc. Still can lay a strip (single) across an intersection. Positraction is one of my next mods.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

Head for sure. Have a 5 channel so don't need power. So was thinking preamp type head and an eq or something if they have that stuff still. But

I definitely need some 5.25s for the supra and some good sounding loud 6.5 components for the fairlane since they are all I have in those ranges on both cars. I just don't know what's good in speakers anymore.

Looking to spend ~$600 total.
Here would be some decent stuff,

Head unit: $165

Sony MEX-GS610BT Single-DIN Bluetooth, CD/MP3 Car Stereo Receiver

5 1/2 comps: $50

Arc Audio XXD 5009 5.25” Component Set

and these sweet 6.5 comps: $275

RE XXX-6.5c 6.5" 2-Way Component Set

Puts ya just under $500. I can even do a little better on that price for ya. The sony has a 10 band equalizer and all the other goodies you would want in a modern HU.

The clarion has time alignment, 3 way active network capable and 3 pairs of RCA outputs. You can basically do all the tuning on it. There is a learning curve but you can learn pretty quick. The time alignment if set correctly will completely rewrite what you think is soundstage lol. Basically plug and play, set gains correctly then tune by ear all on the head unit.
Sorry to say, not much can clean up that pyle's signal, If i remember they dont even use 16 bit DAC processors. Most average lower tier head units use 16 bit and the good ones use 24 bit processors.

If you want the cheapest sound processor, this is the ballpark where it starts http://www.amazon.com/JBL-MS-8-Series-Digital-Processor/dp/B003KN2TQ2

AKA processors completely eat up your budget.
He doesn't have to spend that much on a processor. Minidsp is cheap and it works. I dont use one but a lot of people do, and like it.

For the farelane, I would go with what jeff suggested. clarion cz702, silver flutes and vifa tweets. Boom, $220 otd for that setup.

The supra, now thats a little tricky. Your gonna need to find a capable 3.5 - 4" midbass and use the vifa tweet again, clarion cz HU for it too.

supra is pretty much set for amps. That black ice should be able to handle all speakers and sub work.

Grab a ppi phantom 900/4 for the farelane.

Suprised nobody mention this, since you have 2 old cars that are probably rattle traps and loud. use the rest of the money you saved for deadening and sound proofing your cars.

Btw, love those old school Supra/Celicas. When we where learning how to drift, I had a celica that my uncle gave me. we beat the **** out of that car, but it kept on going. Those 22r motors are bulletproof. Literally... check the episode of Top Gear, where they put an old toyota helix, that has that motor, through a vigorous torture test. Needless to say, the truck kept on starting and going to the next challenge.

Yah those Toyotas are something. Mine has a 3.0 Cressida engine (6m-ge) and has run strong for the 18 years I've had it.

Also you're right. They are both loud and rattle so need volume. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

wow @ inexpensive speakers tho. I'll take your words for it and get them over more expensive component is they are better. I'm only left with 2 issues.

1) I'm still stuck with shaft radios as I'm not willing to cut my fairlane to fit the clarion. Would that minidsp do what the clarion could do? If not I may just... Mount the clarion under my seat. Or splurge and get the better processor.

2) I'm reading up on active crossovers and it says you need a channel per speaker whereas Passive uses one channel per woofer/tweeter pair? So would if I have a pair of 5.25s, tweeters, and then the front speakers I would need a 4 channel amp plus another 2 channel?

Components in front and rear need 2 4 channel amps?

Thanks for the help guys.

The minidsp does what the clarion does and more. Any outboard processor is going to have a real high learning curve, except the ms-8. The ms-8 uses a Mic and does auto tuning. Still a ***** to setup right. If you have the time to learn the processor, the reward is worth it.

The trend now a days is setup a front stage with no rear speakers. This way all stage and music is I, front of you. Your trying to replicate a home stereo system. When I first started I thought I needed rears speakers. Now I can't stand having the rears on. If your worried about people I, the back seat being able to hear music, don't. They will be fine with just the front speaker.

Yes, going active will require a channel per driver. But since you are just doing a simple 3way setup. A 4ch amp is good enough.

If you don't want to try the minidsp. Like you said you can just hide the clarion some where. It does make the tuning a little difficult, but once you have everything setup correctly, your not gonna touch it again.

Oh, btw. If you decide to go with the mini. Your gonna need a laptop to tune.

I dont have any 5.25 speakers laying around anymore..Used to have 5 sets of old Kicker KS series, but those are gone now..I may have a few 6.5s laying around, like CDT Cl-60,M6,and some old Elemental Design 6.5 woofers..no old head units...but several Old school amps, some subs, and a couple lower grade speaker sets(like Cadence BNIB 6.5 component and coax.sitting) for sure.Just PM me. I just may have something that would interest you,and be quite fair on anything I have sitting.Sorry guys.. been a little busy. Thanks for recommending me though

Thank you all for the replies btw.

Not worried about rear passengers hearing music, just trying to get the best I can with the setup I have without cutting or adding anything.

Supra only 3.5s up front.

Fairlane I just discovered has a single hidden 3x5 on dash. I can put two 3s in a bracket! Lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

since there is really non-existent front stage on either car I'm just trying to get the best sound I can out of it.

Dayton Audio ND91-4 3-1/2" Aluminum Cone Full-Range Driver 4 Ohm3.5" only one I could find decent looking on the suggested sites. Any improvement using this and vifa tweets vs. Blaupunkt coaxials?

Stil need a tweeter? Says 20-40w so any benefit to running off an amp vs. The clarion head unit?
I think I Still have a set of these sitting as well Vifta Tweetshttp://www.parts-express.com/tymphany-xt25tg30-04-1-dual-ring-radiator-tweeter--264-1016.Dayton makes pretty good quality stuff..I also have a pair of Dayton HO DVC 4 ohm 10s that I ran for approx 2 months that did very nice..I place an amp on every speaker..even rears@ low volume levels for that surround sound effect, just enough for fill/..

Wow ok. Thank you all so much. I'll buy those 3.5 daytons if you can part with them. The tweets might be a bit large for me to mount on dash maybe? Ive been reading on mounting and it looks like I might mount them in micro enclosures on little pods so i dont have to cut anything; so a smaller tweeter might work.

If I can manage to put two 3.5s in the stock fairlane dash ill snag those CDT 3.5s after the weekend.

Just got your pm as well. It'll take me a while to read through the list but I'll definitely take some 6.5s and a 4 channel.

Also, how does this tweeter look?

https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-amtpod-4-air-motion-transformer-automotive-tweeter-pair--275-195

Seems smallish so I can mount it on the dash without being too crazy looking. Plus they look kinda cool.

So far I think my shopping list looks like this:

Supra - dayton 3.5s from audiobahn, parts-express AMT tweeters, Clarion CZ 702

Fairlane - 4 channel amp and 6.5s from audiobahn, parts-express AMT tweeters, MS-8 processor

and potentially the CDT 3.5s from mylows if I can fit them in the front of the fairlane and if mylows wants to sell.
