tell me what to buy.

Yeah I know; options and opinions. But i haven't known car audio in ages; brands came and went. I have a new job, got married, having a new baby in two weeks, and have 4 other kids already--thus, no time. Haha.

So just tell me what to buy and ill be happy. Here's what I'm workin with.

Vehicle #1 : 83 supra.

Head unit -- none (double din; tho top is like sorta shallow)

Front 3.5" -- blaupunks circa 1996

Rear 5.25" -- none

Amp -- 5 channel ppi black ice BA2200.5

Sub -- 8" sundown sd2 0.3' cube sealed

80 amp alternator. AGM battery in trunk.

--Need head and 5.25s for sure. Possibly 3.5s if something amazing out there.

Since open hatchback. I do have a box that can hold 2 8s and tweeters. Might use in place of sundown?

Blaus are still going good. Not sure if anything leaps better out there in 3.5s. So if not necessary can skip.

I almost exclusively play off my mp3 player or memory sticks. Occasionally radio. Never cds. Have 5 channel amp so don't need power. Are there Preamp head unit maybe?

Sundown is amazing when powered by nakamichi 1500w. Not sure if PPI can power it yet. Havnt tried. As I just barely received PPI.

Vehicle #2 : 69 fairlane

Head unit -- Pyle (classic knob style)

Rear only -- 6x9 holes

Amp -- DENON 65watt x2

Amp2 -- nakamichi 1500w mono

Sub -- 12" infinity kappa (late 90s) 1' cube sealed

Unknown alternator. AGM battery up front.

---Need speakers for sure. Probably head unit.

Pyle head ***** but was only head unit with memory card slot 5 years ago that fits the knob style in classic cars. Its a classic so I don't want to cut it. Has to be knobs. Would new head unit even help sound quality since I only listen to my mp3 player? Speakers powered by amps anyhow. And no one wants to steal a Pyle. Haha.

Rear had 6x9s. Thinking since only speakers in car that components would be better back there as they have to do it all, other than the bass. Could make a plate and direct tweets towards front. Front speakers are not possible. I wont cut my doors and no room for kick panel on drivers side (emergency brake and highbeam kick button).

12" kappa is still strong and super sensitive to even the weakest amps.

Target budget ~$600 but willing to spend more on fairlane speakers or preamp type setup and 80s awesomeness EQ **** for the supra.

Also: Although i like my music loud at times, im more jnto quality. Problem is ....Both cars are somewhat loud: Headers, exhaust, etc. The fairlane is a lightly modded 302 so definitely loud.

I listen to all music: Pop, old school, 80s 90s, rap, house, metal, country, you name it.

I also have no equipment to test eq levels and frequency responses if that stuff is cheap now

Thanks in advance

where in socal? Can meet up and demo my 80 prs and see what features there are and then pick and choose which ones you do or do not need and narrow it down find a head unit that fits your preferences and budget from there. Also to know where you want to be at SQ wise.

I would tag audiobaun if I knew how to on the phone app. He's got all sorts of old school stuff you might be interested in.

And your pic rocks. Godzilla is the ****

like half hour north of Santa Barbara area.

Lets see if this works. Here's my current head in the fairlane. Pyle knobby style. Cost me like $35 but has USB, aux, and even an SD card slot. Has what I need but no ability to configure anything. Is there a way to add some type of processor to it instead of replacing it? Put an eq under the seat or whatever. Has RCA outs for left and right and that's all I have anyhow; left and right rears.

Head for sure. Have a 5 channel so don't need power. So was thinking preamp type head and an eq or something if they have that stuff still.

But

I definitely need some 5.25s for the supra and some good sounding loud 6.5 components for the fairlane since they are all I have in those ranges on both cars. I just don't know what's good in speakers anymore.

Looking to spend ~$600 total.

Id get a clarion cz 702 for both and use raw drivers like silverflute 6.5s and vifa xt 25 tweeters. Do proper time alignment and crossovers with the head unit and youll have a nice soundstage for both cars. Check out parts express.com or madisound.com, they are the go to place for raw drivers. Youll get a lot more with your dollar by running active, not to mention much more sound quality than piecing together cheap passive components/coaxials. It will require some tuning effort on your part but its relatively easy.

Thanks Jeff!

Crossovers with the head unit? Didn't know head units could do that nowadays.

Three things though:

1) for the supra I can use the Clarion for what you suggest, but it has 3.5" drivers up front and 5.25" in back. Do you think it is possible to use raw drivers in that setup and get a proper soundstage? I may have to find a place to mount tweeters... but otherwise?

2) for the fairlane I can use raw drivers like that in the rear and tune from there, but I can't use the Clarion as it requires a shaft style radio (unless I mount it under the seat or something). What kind of equipment can I use in conjunction with the cheap Pyle that I currently have that would have the same effect and ability to tune?

3) what kind of equipment do I need to tune it if I go with your suggestions? the Clarion come with what I need or do I need some other equipment to listen and measure?

Thanks!

The clarion has time alignment, 3 way active network capable and 3 pairs of RCA outputs. You can basically do all the tuning on it. There is a learning curve but you can learn pretty quick. The time alignment if set correctly will completely rewrite what you think is soundstage lol. Basically plug and play, set gains correctly then tune by ear all on the head unit.

Sorry to say, not much can clean up that pyle's signal, If i remember they dont even use 16 bit DAC processors. Most average lower tier head units use 16 bit and the good ones use 24 bit processors.

If you want the cheapest sound processor, this is the ballpark where it starts http://www.amazon.com/JBL-MS-8-Series-Digital-Processor/dp/B003KN2TQ2

AKA processors completely eat up your budget.
