SW level up high and amp gains low, or other way around?

I just bought a headunit that has a seperate level control of -15 to 15 for the subwoofer output. I was just wondering if there are pros or cons for having it set up high and turning down the amps gains, vs. having it set low and keeping the amps gains up. It seems logical to me that having them at like 8 or 10 and turning down the amp would be more ideal requiring the amp to do less "amping". Any feedback appreciated!
