I just read the other day that the supreme court has ruled that people do not have the right to share music, movies, etc., and now software companies can be held liable for selling and or promoting the use of illegal downloading. I was just wondering for those of you who DL illiegally will this hinder you from DL if not what are your thoughts on the decision?

I don't understand the big deal. P2P programs only allow people to share music, its not like some mass server is trying to corrupt the music industry. It would be just like letting your friend borrow a CD, how can they make it illegal? They make it seem like all the downloads is hurting the music business, and artists are "hurting" money wise... Poor Brittney Spears didnt get her surround sound remote control for her private jet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Only part I agree with:)

Remember, the artists are not the only ones seeing money from record sales. It is a large industry with a heck of a lot of pockets to fill.

Right, but it is not like no one buys CD's anymore. There are still billions of CD's sold a year. The numbers have not dropped dramatically, only slightly. The people making money off the CD sales are still making money, and they are still living fine on the slightly decreased sales.

I could see if the CD sales dropped to like the thousands, per copy of a single CD, but that just wont happen anytime soon. If the cost of computers drops dramatically, and the price of the internet drops dramatically as well, then we might have a problem.

So it's not wrong because the people are still making money? Sure, it's only a few tens of millions of dollars per year.....who cares, right? It's not money coming out of your pocket, that's the important thing. From now till the end of your life, why don't you work 40hrs per week but only take pay for 38hrs, and see how much money you'll lose over a lifetime (including opportunity costs like lost interest, lost investments, etc etc). But, it's only 2hrs per week.......it isn't important, right?

Well when cd's cost $20 (in most cases) and Dvd's are $25-30 and both only cost maybe $5 to make it is ridiculous for people to pay that especially when you may like 6 songs off that cd, or maybe only watch that movie a couple of times. I will say this the RIAA is stating that they movie industry and music industry are lousing billions of dollars then how does say movies like Mr. and Mrs. Smith (no particular reason why i chose that name) are doing multi-million dollar ticket sales, and music artists like 50 cent sell what 11 million copies it seems like both industries are doing quite well to me

The main problem is the government and agencys are run by a lot of older people that don't understand what is really going on. They see a potential for money, and they are like GIMME GIMME.

Music sharing doesn't hurt sales. It gets more music heard. I buy music I like, and have downloaded tonnes more. Most of the time, the music I download, but don't buy, is utter shyte and I wouldn't pay a penny for it. Sometimes it makes me want to shoot 50 cent 9 more times to end some peoples' misery! I give this crap 10 more years, once the younger generations that know not all mice need food, we will be able to do a lot more things on the internet more freely. We will be able to play video games where all we do is kill cops. We will be able to anything we **** well please.

Think about it. If I were to show someone against P2P the iTunes music store, where you buy music, and Kazaa Lite, where its free, would they now the difference? I think not.

If music industries and the movie industry lowers their prices then i will pay for cd's, as of right now there are only a few artists i will spend the money on and only a few movies i will buy for the prices that they are sold at

Blame the stores, not the artist. I can go down to best buy and pick up brand new releases for $12.99, and CD's that are only a couple years old for $9.99

Since when does a single artist and a single movie represent the entire industry? Also, how do you know what they could have made had P2P networks not existed?

At most stores there about 19.99 for a new one, and do you really want to wait 2 years to pay 9.99, and i was using the artist and that movie just as examples, to say get the point across

I download but I understand where the industry is coming from, If i went and put all the hours and effort into a cd and people downloaded it instead of buyin it id be pissed. I still buy cds just to have them, the new ying yang twins U.S.A is an awesome cd. (off topic)

Then complain to that store in particular, because it isn't like that everywhere. There are multiple places in my area to pick up new releases for $12.99-$13.99. The problem is the stores in your area; not the industry.

and do you really want to wait 2 years to pay 9.99,
I was simply pointing out you can pick up CD's for less than $10, and not everyone buys strictly new CD's. Most of the CD's I buy are not new releases.

and i was using the artist and that movie just as examples, to say get the point across
My point still stands.

Squeak9798 do you believe that p2p just stops sales of cd's or that it helps get artists names out there? I'm a bit torn on that question because there are alot of cd's that i bought because i got to hear there music before i went and bought the cd, and alot that i didnt buy as well

I'm a bit torn both ways. I think "overall" they hurt well known artists (50 cent, Staind, etc), but they also do help those up and coming artists. I know if I were in a band, I'd release a few tracks myself onto P2P networks to try to become a household name, and gain notoriaty(sp?) through word of mouth.
