I was trolling a little bit and it ended up going in a different direction. I'm sure Massive and I will have a chance to agree on something in a different thread and everything will be fine.
why the excitement about rubber surrounds?
Yeah, I just didn't use one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gifHave you ever wanted to bang really hard but had no rubbers? Lol just kidding
Strictly a reliability/longevity concern. I've just had way too many foam surrounds give up the ghost if subjected to too much excursion abuse. Some of the thicker/stiffer foam surrounds have a sound to them as well. That big stiff ring of foam, if you tap on it, makes its own sound. I don't care for that. I also don't care for the way that stiff surround forces a higher Fs. True rubber is usually very dead and offers a nice amount of damping for any cone ringing, or modes that set up in the cone for various reasons. The downside is that some of the best sounding rubber surrounds will change the driver parameters a bit with big swings in temperature. Foam and santoprene aren't affected as much by that.why the excitement about rubber surrounds?
