Well, The amp had been working for like 5 months until I put it my new car then it turned on for a couple seconds then went into protect. I went through tons of troubleshooting of my wiring and stuff, nothing. Then I look inside the amp at the circuit board and see that there is a resistor loose and just sitting there not connected. I went to radio shack to get a new resistor but they didnt have the right one. The guy said that you can put two resistors in series to get close to the right resistance, I was wondering if this is ok to do?

Sorry for the long story

no warranty. the sundown dealer by me was going to fix it but doesn't have time. He said it's an easy fix but i just need to know if i need the exact resistor or i can run some in series to get close.

look at jameco.com or ebay for one that is the exact value. dont do a shotty job repairing it, get the same part even if it means you wont have it for a couple of days! dont want to have something major blow because the resistor was off to far one way.

Pics of the resistor in question? I'm sure you can find an exact replacement for it but the resistor may not be your entire issue. If we could see where it came from we might be able to see what part of the amp it is used in(power supply, output section, protect circuit, preamp, etc). It may have been broken all along and you never knew it and now that there is a problem its easy to point the finger at that. I have seen plenty of amps with broken leads on parts that still worked ok surprisingly or at least good enough that most people wouldn't know the difference. How did it break loose? Is the amp mounted to a high vibration area like a sub box or not mounted at all? If the part broke loose from vibration there is a good chance other parts may have broken leads as well(like power supply or output mosfets) and are causing the amp to go into protect
