any chance of using a different surround so the xmax isnt limited by it?

That is the whole point of using it... to keep the driver from damaging itself. The surround allows travel up until the last winding of the coil is about to leave the gap.

Here is a video of the suspension capacity of the DD 1508 vs. my E8 v.2 model prototype - I am pressing as hard as I can without pushing my fingers through the cone of the 1508 :

Before anyone flips out on me... I am not talking down on the 1508 here just showing a comparison. The DD 1508 is still one of the higher power handling 8s on the market and is quite loud -- it is just not a high excursion driver.

LoL - trying to avoid that, haha. I did get it moving far enough to tap the triple joint ring against the top plate (20mm or so one way)... so the surround is not holding it back from reaching maximum safe potential by any means!

*edit*

I should add that was free air with a 1500D just below audible clipping @ 1 ohm playing LOW notes... so if you ever hear that noise you have a LITTLE too much power for a 200-watt rated driver!

i figured the surrond was limiting the outward excursion. that is the easiest why to break a trip joint, put the spider up against the top plate,lol.

so now we know if you return this 8 for a broken trip joint you had a lil too much power. on the outward excursion the surrond holds the coil in gap still right? i know you are going to have to blow it up to find the weakest link. how dose the coil hold up to the 1500, get stinky a few a min?

The surround cuts you off right before the coil leaves the gap... without completely destroying the driver in every other way it really can't be done.
