Sundown Audio SA-8 V2's vs Digital Designs 2508's

looking at the design of the v2 and owning the 2500 line of dds i would go with the sundown. the dds tend to like bigger boxes and are really peaky in small boxes. i have no experience with the 2508 thought. but my 2510 would peak really bad in 1.27 tuned to 40hz but it didnt sound bad just rolled off really quick. same sub in 1.8 ported to 40 was much better. the sa v1s tend to like small boxes and are flexible enough to be tuned low where as dd's arent designed to be tuned low. i could only guess the v2 will sound better than the v1 otherwise why would jacob replace the v1 with it.

Thanks for that insight. That really helps. I decided to switch up from the 2508's to the 1508's as a possibility, simply because I dont have a grand to drop on for 8" subwoofers. I probably couldnt afford 4 of their 1508's. They are awfully proud of their equipment.

So its pretty much down to:

SA-8 V1's (My 2nd last choice. Really want the V2's)

SA-8' V2's (My First choice, but pre-order is done and Jacob is extremely overloaded with the abundance of orders so I'd doubt Id be able to get these before mid summer unless my dealer can come through, who is on this board by the way and local to me)

Skar Audio VVX-8

Type R 8 (Depends if they like ported boxes like their Type R 12's do. Their R 12's LOVE low tuned ported boxes. It also depends if they can take more than rated power also.)

DD1508 (I believe all DD subs require the same airspace, whether its a 1508, 2508 etc... But if thats not the case, then I would need to find four used 1508's. These are still dang expensive.)

I still haven't heard anyone's opinion on the Skar Audio VVX-8. I guess no one has any experience with them? I would think people have used these and would have plenty to say about this.

The 1508s still need 1 cube a piece. The skar is supposably just like the sa with the ability to play lower with ease. The alpine is comparable to the dd but needs a smaller box. I would wait for the v2s or go with the alpines.

And dd is proud of their equipment but ive never been disappointed with them.

The same box for all 8's mess is just that, bull-mess. That is a bogus philosophy that is uprooted with a SIMPLE experiment/test. It implies that the response would be the same between all 8" diameter models of each series. The parameters would have to be IDENTICAL between each of them, and even then, the shape of the speaker inside the compression chamber (since they all imply it should be a bass reflex design) would change the velocity profile, which would change the impedance trace, which would change the response trace. That is proof without even conducting an experiment/test. Same box recommendations is bullsh.

1 cube is the recommended size for all dd 8 do to the fact that i averages in performance and power handling better than most other sizes. sure u can stray from the recommended most of us do but then again most of us go bigger than recommended which in this case would work great if he would not be space constrained. i wot sa the sa will play the same as the dd in a 1 cube box because it wont. it has a different motor design and a different suspension setup.

the easiest example of this would be comparing the sa series from sundown and the vvx series from skar. in the same box the skar will play lower due to its design but the sa will be louder in the upper sub bass range due to it being designed that what. these two subs where design by the same person to work well in .6 cubes ported but ask the designer about how different they will sound and he will simply state they were designed with two different purposes in mind

the box is the biggest determining factor here and since space is of premium id advise the sub that are recommended for smaller boxes so he has some wiggle room to play with. i like to build my boxes big and add foam block to take up volume till it sounds how i like it aeros are easy to change and make tuning a breeze when using this method. once i find the best design for my application i then rebuilt to make pretty and more funtional.

I hear all of you all saying that DD requires 1 cubic feet of airspace for all of their 8's, but if you go on their website, they have two recommendations. Their first one is for a compact ported design and its .75 cu ft. The optimal is 1 cu ft. So there is wiggle room with the DD's also.

No love for the Atomic 8? 1k rms. Aluminum coil. And the only OTHER single 8 I've seen do a 150. And in a dang 5 gallon bucket for that matter. Lol. (search my username on YouTube) Also just did a 175.2db in port wars with that sub.

Here's my take on it and I've used just about all of the 8's other than the 2508 (although I have used the 1508)... The SA8 is king of the hill until someone knocks it off. The fact that the v.2's can take more, get lower, are cheaper and are just down right beastly make it a pretty easy decision. The fact that they like a smalller box just makes them all the more attractive. To me anyway.

Just to quantify it for you... I've done 150 with a single Atomic 8 (175+ in port wars on 5k). 153.8 with (4) SA8's. 154.6 with (6) SA8's. These are SPL apps. In my daily, I did a 4th order armrest blowthrough in my Lexus for (4) SA8's on ~ 3k and could do 148's all day at 35hz.

I should be able to post my thoughts on the skar vvx8s soon. Going to be running 4. I've ran sa8,dd 1508,old AA 8s and probably more that I can't remember..lol so I have a little bit to compare to and give a general idea of what I liked best in my application.

The SA-8 v.2 in stock format is heavily optimized for 35 hz on down -- if you are comparing it to a 2508 at higher frequencies it's not the sub for you. We can adjust it and custom build for those applications if desired, though, as we will have motors, baskets, parts, and coils in stock to make them as such.

I will have a "moderately" SPL tuned version in stock in low quantities at first -- and may later on stock a fully made "SPL" version of the woofer for those so inclined.
