I have been looking for some Component Speakers for my new install, and have looked high and low and still have some trouble figuring what I want. Just to give you an idea of what I want from the speaker, I listen to almost every genre of music from time to time and would like a semi-warm sound. I would like a strong mid-bass, that has authority, but still sounds musical. I really dislike harsh highs, so looking for a more smoother, soft high end. My price range is around $200, give or take a few bucks. So far I've looked at the Rainbow SLC: Seem to be well made, and I've heard plenty of good reviews about them(top choice so far); Diamond Audio D6 or Hex: Seem pretty well built and was suggested them by my local shop; and CDT: Heard good and bad about em', mainly good. But they look very flimsy and would die within a month or two. They will be 6 1/2" speakers and amped from a JBL Px300.4 (120 x 4 at 4 ohms). Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

the diamond hexes are really nice i love mine. Do what i did.

Goto local shops, listen to what they have, talk to sales people, get model numbers, then buy online:D

local higher end shop had hexes for 599, i got them a week later at like 283 shipped.

two thumbs up on the diamonds

And did you care to listen to what your ears are saying to any of these brands you listed? Do you want me to tell you which genre you want to listen to?

With that said, you WILL like the JL coaxials.

A lot of what you want is almost directly effected by the proper installation and its quality; after considering the set's characteristics, of course. As far as long-lasting build quality...it would be pretty obvious after doing some research which speakers typically fail after a while even if not misused...I assume you did that research already.

Yes, buy online because you(not you, as in the person from the post above mine) are concerned with build quality and the integrity of how long the product will last. You would want to buy online to lose all support from the manufacturer and its warranty. Buy online and do not support your local audio shop that know more than just model numbers and unpromised stock.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

You can avoid the above, if you buy through an Authorized dealer of whatever product you are looking at. Most Online Authorized dealers have stores also, dont be so quick to judge.

Some cities don't have high end shops. Most of the shops around here carry the same stuff as best buy, and can special order the higher models of those brands only.

But to the original poster, I had some diamond hex s600s in a car that I just got rid of. They sounded much better than the stock speakers that they replaced, but after a while I developed some complaints with them (as I developed a more discerning ear). I think they lack midbass first off, and most owners agree. Also, even the silk tweeters are pretty fatiguing on-axis, but I didnt try them off-axis. Most people who have heard both say the the pre-2003ish hex's (made by eton) were a much better set than the current iteration. I would suggest that you keep looking, as I think there are as good or better sets out there for the money. That being said, I'm planning on giving the SLC kicks a try to see what all the rage is about.

Just to start this off, I've actually heard a pair of Diamond Hex and wasn't to pleased, the only reason I put them in the mix was to see people compare them to others. Just to state some things I didn't really enjoy about them was... the mid-bass area, I wouldn't say it lacked in those areas as much as it wasn't really dominant/clear, in my opinion it had about as much sound quality as the next, just a different sound. But the tweeter I was impressed with, very smooth crisp and clean sounding. You could feel the snare hit on your chest, which wouldn't only be the tweeter but the mid-range aswell. But that being said, my local shops only carry JBL, Kicker, Diamond, JL, and Memphis so most likely I'm going to buy online. And for the install part, I agree with you, thats why I'm not spending $500 on a set so I can use about $200-$300 on dampening my car. Please go more into why you'd buy JL coaxils and not components? Thanks to everyone who replied to this post.

I'm going to suggest what I did in this other post. (entire thread)

Definitely go out and audition speakers if you can. You might fall in love with some Clarions and feel everything else sounds like crap. Or maybe really like a set of comps that is $50 more than what your budget is, but you're willing to wait a little in order to save up that difference in price so you don't have to settle on something else and live with doubt, regret, or remorse.

Its people like you that take away from actual customers and waste the time of shop owners. You want all their help in deciding, but then give them no business in return. Way to go ! You my friend are certainly a winnAr. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

I buy online through authorized dealers. I believe I get a combination of fair price and fair service. I hate my local dealers though...well, dislike. I do buy my accessories there and go to the girl line so they don't talk to me about my system.
