i have a pioneer 4900 from cructhfield for less than 200 which has 4 volt outputs and can use ipod, but i dont use that feature so i dont know if it is actually friendly or not.

i have the 4900 and i hook my ipod up to it, through the ipod hookup, its very nice

Find an Alpine CDA-7998 (or CDA-7949) on ebay.

A small tip, any Alpine with "79**" as the first two numbers will be preamp output only.

Edit: I missed the iPod requirement, and I dont know if the 7998 works with it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Yeah, Rich I really want an Alpine. I really want the CDA-7893 or 7895; lost one this morning on Eghey that went for $250!!!!!. The 7895 was hands down the cleanest HU I have ever owned. That 7998 is the is really cool too. I'll think into that one. I think with the KCi-422 adapter anything with the AiNet will work for the iPod from what I've read.

Also, I guess it doesn't have to be pre-amp only....

Something that has power yet can be disabled would work too. That's how the CDA-7893 and 7895 are.

i think that all the higher models ahve an option to turn off the niternal amp....9855 did, but wouldnt recommend it, i really disliked that HU so...sold it a couple of days ago
