Subwoofers Inside Or Outside?

can somebody explain to me why your able to have a sub outside of a box and it will be fine with the magnet out and cone in....but if you dont have a box then its not good..

sorry for the shitty wording of my sentence

flipping the subs takes the driver displacement out of the box, making the internal space larger. if 99oldsintrigue would have built a larger box, and mounted the subs normally, it would have done the same thing.

when the subs are inverted the box is still being used, the only thing that it changes is driver displacement. And most subs need boxes to have an accurate sound or frequency response. But I don't really feel like typin a super long explanation. I'm sure someone will though

Because there's still a volume of air inside the box, and the cone is still pushing in and out when power is applied.

Doesn't matter which side of the cone is showing, the movement is the same...

Ignoring the box internal volume change, and assuming you built a box for each mounting type (inverted setup is abit smaller to account for loss of speaker inside box), technically the normal (non-inverted) setup would sound better. Why? Motor noise. That's all.

A speaker works by moving its cone in AND out (should be equal amounts). This means the speaker works virtually identically when its mounted with the box on the rear side of the cone (normal), or on the front (inverted). Pretty simple concept, abit difficult to explain concisely. But Im sure you get it now.

So yes, the speaker should perform basically identically whether or not its inverted, but with the motor out, motor noise can become audible if the speaker(s) is mounted fairly close to the listener. A perfect example are arm-rest enclosures in pick-ups with inverted subs right between the passengers. Motor noise is impossible to avoid in that situation. Most noobs wouldn't hear/recognize it most times though.

i was thinking about inverting my tc5200 for shits and giggles but i was worried about the motor noise too. that and it wouldmake the very exspensive woofer in my hatch WAY more noticable to people with sticky fingers..

Plus, your basket/motor is just UGLY. Mine on the otherhand...was designed to be inverted //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif
