Subwoofer size newbie question

I don't know much at all about subs or amps, I just wanted to know, I have a choice between a single 18" sub or a single 12". The 12 is slightly cheaper. I wants something thats going to hit really hard but also at least keep the lower bass sound. What should I get?

someone correct me if im wrong, this is something i heard way back at the beginning of my car audio experience, but the smaller the sub diameter the easier it is for punchy bass and harder for low bass. If this is true, i'd assume if you want more punch than low rumble i'd go with the 12 instead of the 18.

But i may be wrong, ive not had the chance to experiment or anything
