Subwoofer question for the gurus

Where do we get the idea that one 15" will go lower than a pair of 12's? Not to start an argument that gets away from the subject and answering the thread starter, but I've got to know where that idea comes from.

As I mentioned it is box dependant but 15s can usually handle the lower frequencies better not by much (again assuming they are the same woofer) but a decent amount.

Alright now I have lower my options into the Diamond D6's

(2) 12" D6 Sealed OR (2) 15" Sealed

Powered by a D61500.1 Amp

Here is are my concerns, if I go with the (2) 12" it might not be loud or low enought. If go with the (2) 15" it might not sound as tight or as punchy. I listen to rap, rock, r&b and sometime jazz. I can get both for the same price but I just dont know which one to choose. If anyone have any experience with going from 12" to 15" or vice versa, or if you have any ideas for me please feel free to give your inputs.
