Subwoofer Problems

I have an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1 in a sealed 1.0 box with a Alpine mrv-t420(350rms). My subwoofer bottoms out like no other. I dont want to damage my sub so im try to keep the volume low. I have tried turning gain and bass boost down but doesnt solve the bottoming out until the sub is barely producing bass.

What could it be

1.)maybe this sub isnt supposed to be driven that hard???

2.)The air leak in my box(the sub is hard to push in but you can hear a little amount of air escaping)

Can anyone please help me if you have expierenced this problem with this subwoofer or any subwoofer

If you can hear air escaping when you just push the sub in, you may have a problem. An air leak could very well be the problem if it's big enough. Seal it up and if you're still bottoming out, let us know.

Yea its a sound that will definatley get your attention but you may have to listen close to the speaker because i cant hear mine when driving but when i put my ears in the subs proximity it sounds like a whole lotta money goin down the drain

The problem with my air leak is that its in a q-logic box that uses a ring to substitue for a subwoffer with a smaller mounting diameter than the box. I dont know exactly how to seal this one because i dont feal comfortable putting caulk on my subwoofer? Some peopl say weatherstripiing but i am voting just build a custom fitting box to specs so the mounting diameter will be a perfect fit.

DO WHAT??? cone slapping the side of the box. I have heard some crazy shi* but there is no way possible unless the box has wooden dowels that extend into the basket of my sub that the subwoofer would ever hit the box.

you probably have it mounted too far to the sides of the opening, and the cone is slapping the enclosure.....bad thing if it was...get a new darn box
what the hell is this guy tryin to say, i mean surely he's smarter than to say the cone is slapping the box, maybe he ment something else by it.................... but wat ???

A leak box is defnitely your problem with the sub's performance. Now you need to decide what you are going to do about sealing the box. If you suspect the subs and/or transition ring are the problem, go down to your local hardware store and buy some material suitable to cut into gaskets. There are all kinds of materials that can be used for this. My local store has small sheets of rubber (meant to cut into plumbing gaskets) that works perfectly.

A sealed box should have zero leaks. Zero.

thats what im saying idiot.....He clearly stated that the sub didnt match the mounting measurment of the box..so the "dowels" could be close to the sub aka when the sub extends its hittin the box....is that too hard to comprehend or what?
