if subs sit too long on a shelf or anywhere for long periods of time does that affect them at all?

If they are older subs and they are in sunlight or extreme temps the suround can break down.

Yes. The surrounds can harden/deteriorate, the glue can shrink and crack away... You can get dust on it...

But otherwise, speakrs getting used are generally in more trouble than ones on a shelf, except with regular use the surround isn't going to harden, it will just break.

I don't think so. Maybe you want to take it easy with them first volume wise. Then should be fine. What's a long time anyway?
