subs sound bad

OK, I've got a couple of old rockvprd 10"dvc subs in a half asssed box. They are in the trunk. They pound in the car, but if I open the trunk and listen infront of the subs there is a loose sound with kick drums and things like that. Is it normal to not sound as good in front of the speaker?

what do you mean half assed box? you need a box that is ideal for that sub for it to sound its best. also how to did you set your gains? you could be clipping the amp, are you using bass boost on the amp? more details. like, whats powering it? rms of each sub.
