Subs made a funny "blip blip sound"

I just got some new subs installed, and i was playing them at what I thought was a moderate level, and all of a suddn it seemed as if the "volume" at which they were playing at suddenly decreased. So I let them play for a couple of minuetes longer, suddenly they started to hit at an unusual rate. Sounded like dunk....dunk dunk dunk.. I turned the radio off immidiatly and pulled over to look for damage/smoke/smellies ect. But there was nothing. I started back down the road and they sounded fin again. What was this?

You probably bottomed out the voice coils on them or the amp was clipping. nothing to worry about realy, just don't do it mutiple times or something could get dameged.

Bottoming out can be devistating to a sub. If his former has already bent or mushroomed you can kiss those subs good bye.
They are l7's, arent they supposed to be tough? BTW they are taking 1700 watts from a 2500D. Which I have heard isnt that much. I mean **** I thought these were supposed to be LOUD speakers.

Did you set your gains corectly?? Doest matter how tough the subs are If you overpower them and the VC former hits the back plate I can assure you that the Backplate will win that fight.
Now correct me if I am wrong. I could take a voltage meter set it on the RCA coming from the head unit. FOr example, if the amp is 5v and my head is 1.5V then do I turn the know a little under a quarter of the way up?

Your ground on the amp is bad. I had the same thing way back in the day - changed EVERYTHING in my truck. Turned out to be the ground.

You could find a new ground, or remove the current one, make sure its a good spot and scrape the paint away around it, then reattatch firmly....
Precisely. I like to ground to a seatbelt bolt however I sand excessively when I do. If that's not available I like to use a seat stud to ground to. You do want to sand down to bare metal and ground it down FIRMLY. Then measure the voltage at the amp and again at the battery. Both should be the same at rest and during a bass drop.
