subs dont sound right?

i have 2 mtx thunder 4500's in a seled box.when i first hooke it up it sounded alright then my amp went into protection mode.know amp stays on but the subs dont sound right. but if i use my hand to put alittle pressure on the silver part of the sub it sounds more like how i want it to sound.what could make it be doing this.could I have screwed the subs in wrong?
