Sub box in open air?

Ok, so I have been thinking about building one of these cooler sound systems. Did some research and plan on running 4 6x9's and was gonna run 1 12 or 10. Now that money has come into play, im wondering if the sub is even worth it. I did some research but to no avail. I know subs need something to load off of. I was planning on having a board about 2 in above the sub to serve as a mounting point for speakers and a loading wall for the sub. What do yall think? Will a 300-500 watt sub in a sealed or ported box in open air sound good or should I just scrap it?
