He had to bail out of the plane after they ran a bombing run into Germany and northern Italy. Not all the crew survived, my father did and broke an ankle. And the women of the Italian family that owned the field where he landed ran out with knives (!!!) to steal the parachute material because they were made out of silk. (!!!) Then they attended to my father after stealing most of the parachute.
