Big news for the stoners in congress today!

Congressman Bill Frank's Personal Use of Marijuana Act hits the House floor April 17, 2008

Today Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) introduced legislation to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. The bill, dubbed the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008, marks the first time in decades that Congress has considered removing criminal penalties for marijuana. Congressman Frank's legislation would decriminalize the possession of up to 100 grams of marijuana (3ozs) and the not-for-profit transfer of one ounce of marijuana. It would not affect laws prohibiting drug sales or the cultivation of marijuana, and it would not affect state or local laws regulating marijuana possession.

"It's time for the politicians to catch up with the public on this ," Congressman Frank said. "The notion that you lock people up for smoking marijuana is pretty silly."

The bill incorporates the basic recommendation of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse (also known as the Shafer Commission). The commission, which was administered by the White House and published its findings in 1972, recommended that then-president Richard Nixon decriminalize possession of marijuana in amounts that constituted "simple possession."

Thirty-six years later, Rep. Frank will try to do just that.

i just hope it spreads to aiken, sc so i can say "hah *****, i told you it was not such a big deal like everyone makes it"

i think it can be harmful to one's life if it is abused and one remains high for an entire day when there are things to be done and don't get taken care of.

Me on the other hand take a hit or two a day for a little relaxation and mind clearance. I do great in school, stay out of trouble, and have a lot of great drug free friends..... tell me what is wrong with that.

The government wont pass it unless they figure out a good plan to make money off it. Why do you think tobacco and alcohol are legal?

It pisses me off when I see a beer advertisement but at the bottom it says Drink Responsibly so I guess that makes it okay, then I see a Live Above The Influence commercial where some high guy runs a girl over on her bike.

Give me a break, it's such a joke. Over 600,000 people die A YEAR from tobacco, alcohol and prescription drugs, ALL LEGAL. Combine marijuana, crack, heroin, LSD, Meth, any other drug you can think of and they don't even approach the number of those 3 legal drugs.

Maybe our gov. will come to some sense, doubt it tho.

without having drugs illegal, our government would make no money.

To be honest, it will probably never make it out of the House. If you really want marijuana de-crimilized vote

Won't make it out of the house, but the fact that its getting introduced at all is a step forward. Its time for all you pot smokin hippies to hit the phones and fax machines and start letting your house reps know how you feel about the bill.

Don't call when your high though...that won't help.
