Stock HU ?

i have a stock 6 Disc HU in a 2001 Honda Accord, it has the basic EQ settings:

Bass: -6 to 6

Treb: -6 to 6

etc etc

the guys that set up my system put the bass settings back to 0 (i always had it 6 before i got my system installed) but when i put the bass to 6 my sub and overall bass seems to hit MUCH harder than when its at 0 and the bass didnt sound nasty or distorted it still hit clean... if i set reset the gains with my bass setting at 6 would i be hurting my sub at all?

reason i ask is because i had my system playing at its loudest for about 15min. (75% volume) with the bass at 6 and after i opened the trunk just to check if it was alright, i might a smelled a very very faint smell of the subs coil.. i really dont know what the smell of coil smells like because ive never had a system before but i guessing what i smelled was coils

im thinking that my gains are set too high right now for it to be playing with the bass setting at 6... but until i get a hold of a DMM i dont know for sure.. if i lower the gains would it be alright?
