Stock HU and subs problem

my friend has a 97' monte carlo and has 1 12" sub in the back with i believe a 750 watt amp. he had a friend who "knew what he was doing" hook them up for him and they worked for about 2 weeks and no they dont. i can see his problem... when the guy hooked them up he did a HORRIBLE job and just got in done as quick as possible, therefor resulting in a ratsnest of wires in his trunk. so all i want to know is what is the best wat to hook up a sub to a stock head unit in a monte carlo. because im new and i dont want to mess anything up i thought i would ask here before "helping" him
