stereo not turning on, low popping nose coming out of somewhere

About a week ago smoke started coming out of the back of the stereo, possibly from one of the wires touching, but not the stereo itself. After I unplugged it and tried plugging it back in, the stereo no longer turned on so I assumed the stereo had fried, but I tried it on my other car and it turned on so I know the stereo is working. Also, when I connect the stereo to the car that isn't working on, it makes a low popping sound about every 20 seconds.Anyone have any idea what 's going on?

Does the HU turn on in the original ride? If not, did you check all fuses?

If it does turn on, or if all fuses are good, locate a pin out of your harness, take a DMM and do a DC Volts-to-Ground check of each pin.

Never can be certain of what is going on from a verbal description of 'popping' but you may have lost a ground....

The headunit doesn't turn on in the original ride, I have checked all fuses and they seem to be working.

Just checked fuses again and now some of them aren't working when I test them with a light tester, i'm about to go to the store and purchase some new ones.

I put new fuses on there, but 3 of them, 1 of them is the radio memory fuse, isn't turning on, so I suspect this is why the headunit is going into protection mode. Also, the fuse for the radio memory is loose, can this be why it isn't turning on? If so, would I need a new fuse box?
