Stereo getting no power.

Hi,

I've recently bought a stereo and fitted in to the car but am getting no power. I've checked all the fuses and they are all good, connected the antenna to the stereo as sometimes this acts as a ground and still no power. When it comes to wiring i haven't got a clue so i've included some pictures to see if you think the harness wiring is correct. What else can i check for?

take the power and illumination wire and touch them to the positive of the battery and take the ground wire n touch it to the neg of the batt. if it gets power, something is wired wrong in the installation

Those plugs CAN'T be pinned out correctly! the ground wire going to your radio appears to be running to the 12v supply (memory) get out a test light and check your harness, one of the wires - usually bigger gauge than the rest of them - Will be constant 12v power, and another will have 12v when the ignition is in the on/run or accessory position. Then you can find ground with your meter by checking for continuity between a good grounding point (steering column support bolt/nut maybe?) and 1 of those harness wires - that will be your ground...

Edit - be sure to find and isolate the constant 12v, and ignition 12v wires FIRST, then check the remaining wires in the harness for con't. to a good ground point to find your ground wire... - You can always just make your own ground as well, once you have constant & ignition power hooked up, you can just ground the radio to any good grounding point beneath or under the dash...

Thanks guys, just trying to digest what you're saying. My first car you see and never fitted a stereo. I bought the stereo yesterday second hand so there's a possibility it might not even be working...it's safe to put both power and illumination wires on + and ground on - to test if it works?

Appreciate the help.

Pop the hood of you car and connect the constant (usually bigger gauge solid yellow wire) and the switched power / ignition (usually solid red) wires together, run those to the positive terminal of your battery and your solid black / ground wire to the negative terminal. If it will not power up that head unit is jacked, if it does power up & work then at least you know it's not the head unit it's self...

Hi,

I can confirm that the stereo is working by trying what you said.

I found the a wiring diagram of my car on the net that says -

Yellow wire stereo - Thick red with white stripe (Now i've got a thin red wire with white stripe and large red wire) I connected to thin with white

Black wire stereo - Brown

Red wire stereo - Brown with red stripe

Maybe the brown wire (Ground?) is not in a good place. Also i don't really know where the wires go if i'm being honest....i can see that the whole bunch of wires disappear in to a hole behind the dash...does this lead to under the hood maybe? I haven't got a clue lol!

Anyway it now dark over here in the UK so i'll have to work on it a bit more tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience and help, really appreciate it.

just get a cheap test light, with the ignition off / key out: check all of the wires on the vehicle's harness until you find one with power / lights up your test light. Connect that to the larger gauge solid yellow (Constant / mem) wire on your radio's harness. Then with the key in the on position: check all remaining wires on the vehicle's harness until you find the one with power, leave your test light connected and turn the key off to verify that it is only + 12 volts when the key is ON. Connect this wire to the solid red (ignition +) wire on your radio's harness. Then connect your own wire to the black (ground) wire on the radio's harness and connect that to a good metal ground point under your dash. You will now have a functioning radio, but speakers will be another whole issue, your adapter harness isn't pinned correctly so odds are you won't have the speakers wired up correctly either. You will need a dmm & a helping hand to check for continuity between factory wiring to each speaker and remaining wires on your vehicle's harness, connect each one as you go along. Or run your own speaker wire from the radio to each speaker. Problem solved

or look up on google, a wiring diagram for your specific vehicle and just hard wire each individual wire with their corresponding other. as it may sound, its really not that hard at all

All sorted now, i bought a cheap light test and found out it was both red wires that had the power. Thank you both for the help and for teaching me something new //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
