Starving Subs

Is it true that if you don't put enough power on a sub it may destroy it?

My friend has a 600 watt RMS sub, and wants to use a 150 watt RMS amp.

Will this damage the sub?

Yeah, do not attempt this. Giving less power than recommended will cause the coil to underload; which means it will burn in to a million tiny shards and freeze the sub.

Give the sub max power all the time, do not attempt to even turn down the volume...

it is physically IMPOSSIBLE to blow a sub by underpowering it, as long as the power is CLEAN

you can send a speaker a clipped signal all day and nothing will happen to it as long as it's within the speakers thermal limit (RMS)

It will sound like crap if your friend tries to compensate for the lack of power by turning the gains and bass boost all the way up. He's be hard pressed to blow it though.
