starting wages for installers?

i know not every place is going to pay the same, i'm looking for ballpark figures. can i expect 10ish an hour or will i have to start at like 7? it's not really worth my time if i'm not going to be getting at least 10, i'll probably only do this for a year or 2 years tops while i get my bills caught up before going to college.

i'm obviously not as good as a highly experienced, certified installer, but i've installed all of my stereos for the last 8 years, and a few of my friends. i can deaden, build pretty nice boxes, have more than enough tools, including woodworking tools. i know the basics of 12v dc, although i'd probably have to study up on ohm's law a bit. i'd say i'm more experienced than 9 out of 10 people who would just be getting their basic mecp certification. i have a good attitude, work well with people, learn fast, and look presentable, so i dont think i'd have trouble finding employment.

basically i'm trying to decide between staying with working on heavy machinery, which i have experience with and can get 12-15 an hour doing to get everything paid up, or probably making a couple bucks less an hour doing something i enjoy, and would be more of a learning experience for me than just WORK. honestly, i'd rather take the pay cut as long as it isnt too dramatic. is there anything else about installing for a living i should know before pursuing this further?

heres a brainiac idea for you folks who dont have enough common sense to do this...

hop online, make some phone calls and do some research! WOW...Research.

Oh wait, lets come onto a forum and ask a question thats asked a few times a month...BRILLIANT!

It all depends on where you are. I have installed on the west coast, the midwest and now in the south and can tell you base wages vary considerably. But I will also say a lot of the privately owned shops work on commission and is usually between 40 and 50% of the labor you do. You may want to call a few shops in your area and see what they have to say. An average of $10/hr isnt hard to obtain as long as you are reasonably fast and able to dissemble many different vehicles.

i looked around for a couple of hours, trying to find basic starting wages for installers with only basic mecp certification, couldn't find anything. so i thought to myself "hey, i just wasted 2 hours of my life, why don't i go to a FORUM (you do understand the meaning of the word forum, right?) full of people who do this for a living, and spend 2 minutes asking them what they started out making?"

*******.

i also typed installer into search, looked over the first few pages, found nothing, so i started a thread. now why dont you go troll someplace else? oh thats right, you shit on all my threads because you dont agree with my political beliefs.

i'm thinking of taking my mecp basic certification. i've read up on it some on realize i'll basically be an apprentice for a year. what type of wages and benefits can i expect for the first year?
Per Occupational Outlook Handbook:

Median hourly earnings of electronics installers and repairers, motor vehicles were $12.79. The middle 50 percent earned between $10.27 and $16.55. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $8.85, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $22.02.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/graduate.gif.d982460be9f153bb54e5d4cb744f6ae8.gif
