Hey guys! What's going on?

Well, I finally got my first system in my car. Its a 12" Kicker CVR in a 2.0 (after displacement) ported box tuned to 34 hz. This is in a 1995 Saturn SC2.

The only problem is my trunk rattles like hell. At first, I didnt really care, cause I thought you only heard the crazy rattling from outside the car. However, now that I have gotten more accustomed to my system, I am starting to notice the rattling inside of my car.

I was trying to find some sound deadening material that people had left over, cause I did not want to spend much, but I am having some trouble. I looked at the SS site, and realized that b-stock Spectrum was $39 a gallon. Thats not bad at all.

But I do have some questions:

1) How much spectrum will I need to sound deaden my trunk?

2) Can I just paint spectrum on with a paint brush?

3) Aside from my trunk rattling, I feel as though the area under my car under my trunk is also rattling. Will the spectrum in my trunk help keep the rattles from reaching the under carriage of my car?

One gallon should be enough to do the truck. You have to paint the stuff on, it's so thick there is no other way to do it.

i don't know about the spectrum, but i got the sludge in my car and was too thick to paint on, so i just smeared it on with my hands. good stuff.

Just put a gallon of spectrum in my brother's trunk, worked pretty well. We painted on the majority of it but used the SS gun to shoot the stuff into the crevices in the trunk lid so that everything got a coat.

A little note though, don't put a layer or two on and expect it to be a huge difference, the rattling didn't really start to stop til there was about 5-6 layers on the trunk lid.

1gallon = about 50 sqft 1mm thick IIRC so u can guesstimate how much u need.

Ooops for some reason I thought you were talking about the SS Sludge. The regular Spectrum you can paint on or spray it on with a gun. Shooting it on would be better than painting it on since you can get it more even and it takes less coats. Though either way is fine, painting it or shooting it.

So if I need a lot of layers of spectrum, am I gonna need a lot more than just one gallon?

Damplifier will be better than the spectrum in some areas. The spectrum is so incredibly easy to install. Damplifier takes a lot longer. For doors, i wouldnt use the spectrum.

Go with the damplifier.

It sucks putting the spectrum on without the gun, especially on a trunk lid

I didn't have any problems putting it on with the gun, or without the gun, both ways worked just fine...it just took a while becuase you have to wait for the stuff to get fairly dry between coats.

One gallon is plenty for the trunk too, or at least it should be.

just get sludge. all you need is a lot of latex gloves.

Honestly, for vibration dampening I would use mat over liquid.

From all of my research thus far, it appears that mat is more effective as a mass loader at reducing rattling/vibration/resonances than liquid. So, if simply reducing rattling is your goal, a good butyl rubber mat is your best option (Secondskin Damplifier, Raammat 60BXT, etc).

I have some spectrum arriving tommorrow, and I plan on tossing it on this weekend //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif But, I'm using it as a "reinforcement" on top of regular mat damping for added resonance/vibration control and more noise absorption/reflection, since from what I've learned thus far liquid is supposed to be better at actual noise control than mat.

obviously you haven't used sludge //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif this shit almost stopped my roof flexing entirely. i only put 3 layers and when i play like 40 hz. test tones at full blast i get a little flexing, but nearly as much as i used to. had i put about 2-3 more layers i would've been all set. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
