Real busy with school, but that may be something in the future for sure..

They are XBL^2...so output drops substantially over 50Hz. Now I am a stronge beleive that subwoofer is just that a SUBwoofer...but in a car environment you should be able to cross your subs over at 60-70Hz with out them cutting back on output on their own.
w6's sound good, really good. but their output just isnt up to par with the Mags and XXX's. Can they get loud, hell yeah, do they have as much SPL potential. Simply put, no.
Upper bass roll-off is mostly due to inductance, not XBL^2. This is why Adire went through great lengths to lower the inductance on the new Brahma's.

Not to mention, I've had plenty of experience with the Avalanche 12 and it doesn't lack above 50 hz at all. In a 1 cu ft sealed box, it had PLENTY of punch and nice smooth lows. I'd venture to say it was your box/install and not the sub.

True dat.

Though XBL it'self doesnt cause it (that I know of. I'm not an electrical engineer) every XBL subwoofer I've heard does not do well above 60Hz while still retianing flat lowend.

Id actually have to agree with that. Ive had my Brahma 15 in both sealed and ported setups. Both dropped off quite a bit from 55hz on up. I liked the ported setup better though, the massive low end more then made up for any loss that came above 55hz.

Before anyone asks why I say 55hz or how big of a drop, not sure about how big a drop but its quite noticable. I ran test tones on both setups, the drop becomes obvious around 55hz, around 60hz its dropped a lot. The difference between 50-60hz was about double.

Box was a 3.5cube tuned to 30hz. My current sealed setup, around 3.3 cubes does the same thing. Just not as loud.

Well, maybe it wasnt just my box afterall! Well, hopefully I wont have this problem with the mags, im sending my deposit in tomorrow. Anybody want to point me in the right direction to look for box designs. I'd like to talk to Loyd about it but I cant get ahold of him.

Maybe I didn't notice it because around 60 hz is where most of the punch is at. Above that its more of a buzz instead of a rumble and I don't enjoy my sub playing that anyways.

I guess its a preference thing, but I hate the way my sub sounds crossed at 80hz compared to 63hz where I have it set now with a steep slope. It still does what its supposed to do, hit the lows and punch like a mother...

If possible, id just have him build the box. Im sure you'll get a hold of him in the next month, personally im thinking everyone will be getting their subs in early in january. So you do have time.

As for box designs, id just stick close to what is listed on SI's site for the 15s ported. Thats around 7.0 cubes after sub & port displacment tuned to about 30hz. Im sure you could stray from those #'s a little bit but I would stay close to those specs.

I like how everyones wondering why they have no output above 60 hz when they take a sub with 3inches xmax p+p to and put in in a ported and tune it in the low 30's... I've always liked a high exursion sub with a q of about .9 sealed. Still good lows with lots of power, and usually sounds pretty balanced. I havent' heard of ava's lacking in the upper end very much. At least not compared to the xxx or older brahmas, but heck, I dont' really have a need for much over 60hz anyway. Did you ever try your ava in a less low end oriented box, fryman? I know you did your ava tuned really low, mags at 33ish and mags in a small sealed box, all of which would definetly give your mag more upper-end vs your ava, regardless of driver differnences. From a purely inductance POV the ava is quite a bit lower, at least in the 15 and 12 models.

I wondered, but he said biased like before, he had an issue with me being "biased" a while back on a similar sort of thread. I poined out that mags arent' quite the best when it comes to price/perf. A fact that I hear being touted alot now, sadly enough, since FI has started picking up, since it's manf. direct. Think it may have been another "mag alt" thread, lol.
ps.he quoted fryman quoting me,haha ambiguous ftw!
I was quoting fryman, he used to hail the avalanche 18, now he switched up and its time to talk about the mag 15's

Thank you come again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'd venture to say ALL XBL^2 subwoofers roll-off HARDCORE in the upper octaves. Why? Because it's true...

thats a fhasho my old 15inch ava did, but then again it was tuned at 28hz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'm going to shoot him an email and try to work things out. He lives roughly 4 hours away, which isnt too bad, at least for me. I wouldnt mind driving down there and letting him build me a box, hopefully things workout.

I've been emailing back and forth with Kevin and he said hopefully ppl will pay in full near the end of the group buy and they will have the subs sent out by Dec. 18th, or sometime near then, and I live 2 shipping days away, he said I would get my subs by Jan. 1st for sure.

Thanks for the box suggestions, but my fingers are crossed I can work things with Loyd, I dont really know him, but he seems like a cool guy.

good, just making sure. Avas are nice though, I like my 15. I've though about picking up his 18, but just haven't invested in enough of a ht system to keep up with it.
